Ok, I have a really weird problem that I can't seem to figure out. I have been trying to install certain applications on my computer, but during installation I get corrupt media and bad i/o error messages. The first program I recieved this on was RtCW. I get the error when installation is at 56%. I tried copying the whole CD to my hard drive and installing from there, but I got the same message. I know for a fact that the CD is good, b/c I have installed the game before. I really don't think that it is my CD-ROM, b/c I succesfully installed the game on previous installations of Windows, plus I get similiar errors on programs I got off the web. Can anyone help me fix this? I really don't want to install Windows again, b/c I have already done that several times this week due to other problems I have.

There could be something wrong with your HD.
Run chkdsk from command prompt.

Thanks, I just tried that, and found some errors. I got those fixed, but I'm still having the same problems installing the programs...

I know exactly whats going on there... your using Winace... and your machine is overclocked on an athlon/via platform correct?

I had the same problems at 56% with RtCW..... clock your machine at stock speed and try re-decompressing the ace file again... or get Xace(the free extractor) as it doesn't seem to extract out bad files.

my friend had this happen as well.. there is something wrong with winace... it does not like even the most modest overclock. I have submitted a bug report to them about this situation.

I had this problem with RTCW, and another game that was Ace'd...both ended up being excellent games that I will be purchasing when the money crunch is over.

Believe it or not, that's not the problem... funny that they were both at 56% though. I'm sacrificing speed for silence by using a Panaflo on my processor, so I can't really overclock without getting too hot. Plus I have never installed Winace. Thanks for the advice though.

Your not running NAV or some other kind of antivirus program, are you? A few years ago i used to have problems with not being able to install anything that used 'installshield' while NAV was running. A quick disable and it installed fine. Of course i haven't seen this problem in a long time.

I got errors installing Unreal Tourn. from CD on XP (always installing on my 98 system). I was told to not install it from my DVDROM drive (which I had been), and to copy it to the HDD first and install from there. For other reasons, I never did get to try either way to see if they worked.

BTW, what is RtCW?

benhar, what OS are you using?
sounds like your windows installer is damaged or corrupt!

Windows XP. Think it would be worth my while to try installing it with my roommate's copy?

try start/run> cmd & at the prompt type sfc/runonce. this is supposed to check your system's files & replace any corrupted ones.
you'll need your xp cd!

hmmm weird... but yeah it was exactly at the same point 56% that I was having the problem... but it was because the bin/iso file that was extracted from the .ace was bad thanks to winace. I did however read at activision that it happens sometimes due to the cd reading too fast or something, they suggested using Nero CDSpeed to set your drive down to 8x or under.. and then trying to install...

I tried it but of course it didn't work for me... cause my problem was because winace didn't like my OC... wouldn't give me an error message, but it would just create screwed up files.

:(

good luck fixing it... computer problems suck..... I think im finally stable... slight OC.. 900@1000
even the dreaded "infinite loop in NV_disp.dll" seems to be gone....

Thanks for all the help!
After re-installing Windows (again), I was finally able to install the game.
