I've tried 3 times to install a modem on my new K7S5A, and failed each time. What am i doing wrong?

I started with the old motorola SM56 from my old system. This installed fine, but would cause crashes while going online more and more till eventually it stopped my system POSTING. I figured it had died, and got a new one. Then I read that the K7S5A often has problems with SM56s and figured that was it.

Then i ordered a Diamond suprasomething hardware modem. Plugged it in, windows98 detected something, but the drivers wouldnt recognise the modem. tried latest drivers, same problem. RMAd it and got my money back, less postage.

So today i figured i'd try my local pc shop, pick up their cheapest modem, and give it a whirl. Apparantly its a Pine v.90 ESS2898 chipset modem. I plug it in and... no POST. All 5 PCI slots... no POST. Take it out and i'm booting again. This is funny, because i'm using no other PCI devices. A quick try installing an old PCI video card worked just fine.

Before i go back to the shop tomorrow and swap it for an external, does anyone know what i'm doing wrong?

I feel your pain.

I find it very strange that it wouldn't even post.
I can't think of what to say since it wouldn't post with it in, can't even get to the bios.

try a nice external hardware modem, they are great, I have one for backups:)

Oh well, i'm sure having an external modem will come in useful one day. My local PC shop is selling one at only £30 (a Swansmart Turbo), and at least the flashing lights will keep me entertained while i download stuff!

It just gets under my skin that I can't even figure out where the problem lies... I think i'll have a go tonight at disabling things in the BIOS one by one in case its some conflict prob...
