right round like a record, baby
right round, right round :music:

tunage!

you probably cant here it over the sound of your reverse gear....reverse gears are usually straight cut gears which is why they make that "whine" (also all motor racing gearbox's ie in rally cars make the same whine because all the gears a straight cut, they are much better for going fast..........but not so great for comfort)

and to be fair in your car its only gonna be a small-ish Light Pressure turbo anyway so its not gonna make loads of noise

Is it because when I put the car in reverse the exhaust gasses go backwards too?

There's actually a built in electric motor which pushes your car backwards. Normal engines can't turn the opposite direction to turn the wheels backwards. Therefore, you need an electric turbo if you want to hear it. This will also give you 300 RWHP. That's Reverse-Wheel-Horsepower

Arent reverse and first gear the same thing, just that reverse makes the engine go backwards so you can drive backwards? I figured thats why I couldnt hear my turbo. Since the turbo only would work with gasses going one way, if the engine went backwards so that the exhaust gasses went backwards then the turbo wouldnt work.
Isnt that a good theory? Or am I off base a little bit here?

nope the engine doesnt go backwards.......reverse gear spins the opposite way to the other gears..hence you go backward

Sweet, In that case lets turn the engines around and run all gears in reverse (except reverse obviously).... that way the engine will only use gas when you are backing up!! Awesome, screw hybrid cars, I call shotty on the patent.

The simple answer is that a turbo is a load controlled device by way of a wastegate. Have you ever noticed that when you free rev the engine in neutral you get no boost either? Reverse uses a lot of mechanical advantage and thus the engine is not working that hard or revving that high.

Man, the turbos they put on those can-am cars - they'd make 200HP off boost and close to 1400hp on boost. I heard an interview with a driver and he said he'd put his foot down as soon as he started braking for a corner, and by the time he needed his power back the turbo was about done spooling. haha, put on of those in your golf . . .
