Just finished putting together a new PC for my parents. But when i turn it on, the monitor doesn't light up. The PC itself seems to be working - the CPU fan is spinning and all. But the screen just doesn't light up. The parts that are connected are: cpu, ram, video card. The monitor is supposed to light up with just these parts connected, right? I tried plugging in the floppy drive too, but that didn't change a thing - the light on the drive stayed on though, if that means anything. So anyway, what's wrong here?

Power supply/cpu(and a cooling device)/ram/video card/keyboard is all you need to get all the way into the BIOS of a motherboard and fix the settings for the setup.

Is it in a case or do you have it out?

Your system doesn't like something you're doing.
I would recheck jumpers on your board again.
If you have multiple strips of ram, reseat them and put in one strip at a time.
Only have the video hooked up.
If it's a brand new board, it wouldn't hurt to clear CMOs either.

If the light on your floppy stays on your cable is reversed where it plugs into the floppy. If you are lucky, there will be a red stripe on the cable, match that with the #1 pin on your floppy.

What motherboard and CPU are you using? I just went through something like that with a Biostar M7VIB-A KT266 DDR and a Duron CPU because I left the FSB at 266 which will not work on a Duron. All I got was spinning fans and drives. Set FSB to 200 and everything works fine.

Took out the video card and put it back in, and then put the RAM into a different slot. Works like a charm now!

So is one of the RAM channels messed up?

You probably had one of those mobos with ram banks. You know, bank 1 bank 2, etc... You need to put the ram in the first slot, or it won't work right.
