Just finished putting together a new PC for my parents. But when i turn it on, the monitor doesn't light up. The PC itself seems to be working - the CPU fan is spinning and all. But the screen just doesn't light up. The parts that are connected are: cpu, ram, video card. The monitor is supposed to light up with just these parts connected, right? I tried plugging in the floppy drive too, but that didn't change a thing - the light on the drive stayed on though, if that means anything. So anyway, what's wrong here?

Are you getting any error code beeps? Any beeps at all? You should have one short one if the pc is working correctly.

Did you try reseating the video card? If that doesn't work, take the card out and take a pencil eraser to the contacts. Blow it off so there's no pieces of eraser on the contacts, and put it back in. That's worked for me a time or two.

check to make sure that the reset switch hd leds and pw leds are set correctly! Also what kind of video card is it ? Are you getting the first beep like its booting? YOu must leave your specs of this PC also! Are there lights on the board ? If so which is lit?

also make sure your power supply is set for the right voltage... I've had a couple come across my desk that default weren't set for 115 and that will give the same error you are talking about- not to mention being very bad for your hardware;)

1.try to unplug and clean the monitor cable plug
2.try twisting your monitor cable so it wouldn't bent.. i have a similar problem with my monitor because all this time the cable was bent downward, so i straightened the cle and it works
3. make sure that the power cable is connected properly.. see if your stand by light on your monitor is lit, if so, there's nothing wrong with the power..

good luck

Took out the video card and put it back in, and then put the RAM into a different slot. Works like a charm now!
