Why can't I get my PS2 mouse working via serial port?

So I have an old computer, 486 DX/2, running win95. I also have this really neat PS2 mouse with a phone in it (yeah, I know) I'd like to use with the computer. Unfortunately when I run it through a PS2->Serial adaptor the computer can't pick it up. I know the mouse works, and I know its in the right port. Is there something I'm missing?

P.S. I have a serial mouse and it works fine, so I know the port isn't bad.

in order for a ps2 mouse to work with a ps2>serial adapter, the mouse itself has to support serial mode. If it's simply a PS/2 mouse, then it's not gonna work. Check to see if your motherboard has a PS/2 header. So you can buy the ps/2 port to plug into the motherboard and use your mouse.

Actually, there aren't any ports onboard. (The mobo is that old) Its all on the IDE Controller, which to give you refference is EISA.
