Why can't I get audio out of the rear speakers?

I've got a set of klipsch 4.1's hooked into the onboard realtek ac97 audio on my IT7-MAX2 motherboard. I also have an old Vortex 1 in the system just to have a game port so i can use my old sidewinder for Madden. I've had this configuration for over a month, and everything was fine, audio came out of all 4 channels, the control panel could test each speaker individually, and everything was fine. Winamp and games came out of all the channels too. Today I turned on winamp and I can only get sound out of the front two channels. The sound configuration applet for the audio chip is set up for 4.1 and I can still test all 4 channels, but winamp and games are now only coming out of the front channels.

If you are using windows XP try this.

start > settings > control panel > sound and audio devices

Then on the bottom group that is labeled "Speaker Settings", click the advanced button
and on the "speakers" tab make sure you choose "Quadraphonic Speakers".
If it is already selected, select a diffrent one, apply then go back and reselect
Quadraphonic Speakers.

See if that works.
