why can't i format my USB drive to NTFS?

sandisk mini cruzer 256 MB only gives me options of FAT and FAT32 in winXP SP1.
is there anything i should be doing?

the memory controller probably doesn't support NTFS. for a small drive like that it doesn't matter much. They are pretty slow anyway. You should use FAT or FAT32 because they work with mac's too.

I think the mini partition size for ntfs is like 500mbs so your drive isn't big enough.

I have a 400MB partition that is NTFS. It's not usb drive though.

I doubt that NTFS will speed things up in this case.
and for encryption.
If I recall the drive itself has options for security, so encryption at the file system level is probably unneeded.
I think the mini partition size for ntfs is like 500mbs so your drive isn't big enough.
The minimum volume/partition size for NTFS is 10MB. So that is not an issue.

NTFS can not be used on floppy drives, so that may be an issue to consider with USB drives of this type.
