Why Can't I Find A Second job?

Dedpuhl

Lifer
I have been looking for a weekend job for about a two months now. I currently work for the state as an engineer. I know some of the places I have applied are hiring seasonal/temporary help. Unfortunately, I never get callbacks. I don't understand it at all.

I don't know if it's because I am overqualified to work a cash register or stock product or even work on the sales floor. Maybe it's because they think I have a full-time job already and would slack on a second.

I have no clue. This is confusing me and pissing me off. I really want another job to catapult myself out of my accumulated debt.

Have you tried bartending? I heard the pay is good. BUt, i think nord is right, the reason is because many ppl still dont have FIRST job.

now onto another question, I thought engineer for the state pays well?

Well, I understand the "can't find a first job theory," but I know MANY people who have 2 jobs.

State engineers generally start off with lower salaries than engineers working in the private sector...

I think it's overqualification and they think you'd bail on them quicker than someone who'd be doing this as something necessary for their livelihood.

Well, the jobs I have been applying for are seasonal positions. So if I bailed, they could snatch up another scrub...

Yeah but who wants to keep training ppl for Seasonal positions when you only have a few months work. Being that you are overly qualified you run a huge risk of ditching them earlier into the season than a young kid looking for a job..

wish i had the engery to work at another job. private sector engineers work their a$$ off to get paid more. when i turn 45 I'll work for the state. 🙂 relax and enjoy life.....

No you won't, you will be making too much money to want to take the paycut.

maybe it is because you are only available on weekends. i know where i work, if your availability is limited, they wont even look at your application.

Many "private sector" civil engineers I know do not get to truly enjoy life and the money they make. When I get my Master's Degree and pass the P.E., then I might consider working in the private sector.

I am also available after 3:30PM every day.

probably putting that you are a card carrying member of the ACLU on your resume does't help.

sorry just a heathen joke.

I think this is pretty much right. after 3:30 pm doesn't help that much either. Employers want you to revovle around them.

I worked for 8 years at Kroger and the senior employees got the day shifts. The rest of the scrubs worked the night shifts.

cause we are in a recession, with unemployemtn lines as big as they are it's prolly cause there are not even a lot of FIRST jobs to be had 😱

THAT is the reason. Where I work it is written in the company handbook that secondary employment of any form is HIGHLY discouraged.
