Why can't I burn @ 12x?

Short specs (read system info in sig for more):

1.4ghz Athlon w/ KT133a chipset
Adaptec 29160 in a 32-bit slot
Quantum 10k III U160
Seagate Barracudda IV (IDE)
Plextor 12x/4x/10x CD-RW
Toshiba 12x DVD-ROM (IDE)

I did have MINOR disk activity (someone was taking a file off seagate drive (just a mp3, not real traffic), but I was burning off of SCSI HDD, so shouldn't be an issue).

Anyways:

I tried to burn @ 12x from both the Seagate & the Quantum & neither would get past 5% on the CD-R without a buffer underrun. I also can't burn from DVD-ROM -> CD-RW either @ 12x. However @ 8x I have NO PROBLEMS. Any ideas?

I had this problem. The fix for me is use the older driver. Don't use the newest driver from Adaptec. If you have WIndows 2000, use its Adaptec driver.

The Windows XP one doesn't work with me (its like the new Adaptec driver). I kinda cheated and copy the Windows 2000's adpu160m.sys file. You might need a dual boot to get this working though, because Windows doesn't let you change .sys file while in the same Operation system. If you want the file, I can email it to you.

well I SHOULD be able to in theory just update it with the win2k driver. Do you have the whole .inf & everything? (I don't have dual-boot right now). What's the version # at least so I can try & find it?

Well, I just needed to replace one file, adpu160m.sys from Windows 2000. I backup the XP's adpu160m.sys by renaming it.

yeah, but I won't be able to replace this file without a dual-boot. Hmm...wait, maybe a bootdisk? Anyways, want to e-mail it to me.Newton_Scott@roberts.edu

I have the same Plextor 12/4/32 with an Adaptec 19160. Under Win2k, i tried many different drivers and was never able to burn at 12X or even 10X. Like you, I could burn at 8X also. I'm using WinMe now and burning at 12X again with very little CPU utilization. I love my SCSI CD-RW again! damn Win2k/XP drivers.......:disgust:

I know what you mean soulm4tter. I first thought my burner was broken haha I got the burner from Mastertech01. Really nice and helpful guy by the way. When I test it in Windows 98Se it worked fine, but not in Windows 2000. Like usually I updated all drivers when I got new stuff on Windows 2000 (my main OS). I can't burn in Windows 2000 with Adaptec's new driver. Finally, I removed the new driver and try the default windows 2000. Bingo, it worked.

Tried WINXP with its default driver and it didn't work, so I did that little trick while in Windows 98. Everything is good now.

hmm, i wonder why adaptec doesn't fix the driver. Does the driver work fine in all other respects?

Haven't noticed any issues yet, but also only been using it for an hour or so.
