Why Can't Hip Hop be Like the Way it Was?

Go listen to the Roots, then. No one's asking you to listen to modern hip hop. It's a different style of music that some like and some don't. Things change, welcome to life.

I never knew that the Roots had broken up?

Hip Hop is a trend thing, its like pop music except with an urban edge to it. If you go back to the 80s with like grandmaster flash, Run DMC, and Boogie Down Productions and then you go to 90s with Gangsta Rap and other genre's of hip hop the time had a different vibe to it. Heck you can almost say that hip hop has a local appeal to things for the underground scene cause its the only genre where a person is from has an influence directly on the type of hip hop that is created.

they're still around... it's just that hip hop sucks these days. turn on any hip hop station... it's fucking awful. i long for the days of good shit from the 90s, or at least a similar style... all i get it repetitive bullshit with no characteristic quality between any of the "artists" or "groups"...

the same can be said for rock these days.

Simple, because of heavy commercialization. Old school hip hop/rap did it for ideas, views, music, etc. Today's do it for $$$, and that involves to be on top of billboards and attract the average Joe who is a complete idiot. Same goes for other genres of music.

While I agree with you that I don't particularly like what's at the top of the mainstream, you don't have to listen to that. First of all, there was a decade of the style of hip hop you're looking for, and if you poke around, you'll find an enormous amount of music you've never listened to.

Second, people who rag on how awful music these days is are missing out on the democratization of recording/mastering equipment that is going on right now. It's become very cheap to record, make and distribute music now days, creating both high-quality amateur recordings as well as quite excellent sounding small labels such as Def Jux and Signature Sounds. Since you like hip hop, try something like Aesop Rock or RJD2.

Well duh. Radio and top of the charts almost always sucks. For every genre. For every medium. In every country. On every continent.

It's nothing specific to hip hop. And people who can't find good new music (of any sort) generally just aren't looking properly.

It's still lots of good stuff out there, unfortunately it's not on the radio.

Try listening to some of these guys if you have'nt heard them already:

Mr Lif (I love this guy, a superb lyricist and an overall intelligent emcee. I don't always agree with his politics but his music is dope.)

Head High - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHM_WGZ8o94

Folklore - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnCuiF2dz9Q (Vinnie Paz steals this song)

Breathe - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzKs2kw5WxU

Canibus (He's probably the most dedicated rapper ever. The entire industry turned their back on him, but he just kept on bringing it. I really probably should'nt have to speak on his lyricism, he's legendary)

The Ghost Of Hip Hop's Past - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZp5N62I_NM

Jay Electronica (I'm gonna keep his description short, incredible. Just listen for yourself)

Exhibit A - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eauYh5tmWCM&feature=related

Exhibit C - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lrVO3pPDP4

The Ghost Of Christopher Wallace - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woHMTgvfs_E&feature=related

there's a few to get you started

Mostly because people like this are now involved:

Should we get off your lawn too?

No. It's that we all grew up to be like our parent's and now hate what the young people are listening to.

We are old now. Accept it.

Well I was actually just quoting Wu Tang's "Can It Be All So Simple". But yeah, you're probably right. We had LL, KRS, Eric B and Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Run DMC, Public Enemy, and early 2Pac, Biggie, Wu Tang etc. Late 90's to present is where things started to suck other than the early days of Eminem (remember when he was with the Baka Boys - fun times?). There are still a few good artists out there but it's slim pickings nowadays.

I still like some current artists and they're not all sht. Lupe, Talib, Common, Roots, Dilated Peoples, Atmosphere, MF Doom etc. Punchline battle rappers Vakill, Canibus, Celph Titled are a few good ones.

It's not so much slim pickings it's just people have less time and energy to devote to looking as they get older (or less attached/interested) so more and more they just see the big acts and judge by them.
