Why can't college football coaches criticize officiating without getting reprimanded?

Tennessee's Phil Fulmer gets reprimanded for criticizing SEC officiating.

South Carolina's Steve Spurrier gets reprimanded for criticizing SEC officiating.

You have two of the winningest college coaches of all time criticizing your officiating. So what do you do - actually take a good hard look at your officiating, or penalize the coaches who opened their mouths? You penalize the coaches, of course!

This is ridiculous. Sure, there are probably official channels for coaches to express their frustrations about their own conference. However, especially from the Fulmer article above it sounds like he took those channels and got no satisfaction from the SEC. These two guys know their football - maybe the SEC should listen?

I agree it's bullshit...

College football has some of the WORST officiating I have ever seen. Officials ALWAYS go for the 'big name' teams - or their own conference teams.

This year.. Ohio vs Illinois.. all of a sudden the game is close - so EVERY call goes for Ohio. USC seems to get a 'lucky break' every game.. over and over.. because of officiating. I'm sick of seeing horrible calls.

Good for Spurrier.. the SEC has some HORRIBLE officiating.

I'm a UF fan.. and almost every game I watch, I can tell who the officials are 'rooting' for since every game is one-sided.. Either they hate UF or love UF.. but their biases show in their calls.

I'm so fed up with the SEC in general. I don't know who they are trying to impress with their holier-than-thou attitude. Between banning crowds from coming onto the field after the game, banning South Carolina's rooster from doing its thing, and then these two examples, they have taken a stance that I feel has displaced a lot of fans. I hope it bites them in the ass.

I have seen tons of bad calls in the SEC this year and I haven't watched many games. The worst are the ones that go to replay and are still bad. Replay officials tend to be the most biased officials out there.

its easy to figure out way. they don't want them yelling at the Refs after every lose for crap they think happened.

But the thing Fulmer was complaining about DID actually happen. Let's put it this way. If the official had made the correct call in the TN/LSU game there is about a 90% chance TN would have won that game.

yeah. this case it was true. say in a game a team lost so they blame it on a call that did not happen. people are idiots. they will believe the coach and it will be all over the papers and shows.

I agree. To be fair, I'm a Vol fan and agree that Fulmer should keep his mouth shut. His comments have merit to an extent but I don't see him complaining that the refs missed a huge call AGAINST the Vols in the first half either. The two plays cancel each other out in my mind.
