Why can't barton reach as high of speeds as a t bred b?

The barton is pretty much just based off a derivative of the t bred b core with a few minor additions. Its very similar to it, besides the 512 cache. However, Barton can't reach nearly as high of clock speeds as some DLT3C 1700+'s. Why is this?
 
Blame the extra cache. The more memory you put on a CPU, the harder it is to overclock. This is why the Intel Celerons overclock so well.
 
I presume you are referring to a general trend because I know someone with a Barton 2500+ that does 2.5ghz on less than 1.792v on air and mine does 2.45ghz on 1.825v on air.

the extra 17million processors make the difference. if 1 of them cannot work at such high speeds, it means the whole chip is stuck at that speed. kinda like with memory chips, whereas single sided usually overclocks better than double sided.

that's why it'll be interesting to see how these new "thortons" overclock

256k L2 cache but same die size as the barton....

hmm... may have to try 1 of these...

see, i only went through 2 bartons... and i'm satisfied 🙂

someone on forums.rojakpot.com supposedly got his friends 3200+ and his own 2500+ up to 3 ghz on air with default vcore. this is sooooooooo hard to believe. it's like me saying i'm super man and youre dead!

I think I saw some of that thread posted here in this forum. The guy went on to state that 3ghz is not much of an overclock out of a ~2.3ghz cpu. 3ghz out of a Barton is likely to take 2.2v or higher on LN cooling. Wait a minute... That kinda sounds fun!


 
I've seen a guy hit 2.95ghz with dry ice. It's legit with tons of pics and he's a regular, if only I could find the link.... He seems to be more into his cooling and negative C temps then his overclock though 😕
