a big fat NVIDIA link right there??? ahh come on! at least say like, "Suck a fat dikk nvidia, you may have conquer us, but Geforce still can't run Glide!!!! MUHAHAHAHAHHA"

edit: (that was an uneducated rant anyways, for those who didn't catch it)

anyway, the site goes down permanently on Feb 19, there's still 2 weeks left for some last minute reminisce.

<< Did you know NVIDIA GPUs are the graphics of choice for Half Life users? In a recent Valve Software survey, data captured from 35,488 Half Life user machines showed 67% of graphics were NVIDIA. >>

Well duh, who uses anything BUT nVidia cards (besides me of course).

<< Suck a fat dikk nvidia, you may have conquer us, but Geforce still can't run Glide!!!! MUHAHAHAHAHHA" >>

Someone should h4x0r the site and put an ATi link above the nVidia one :D

Your idea of proudly would include saying "Suck a fat dikk" to the the company that saved them financially and which they may still hold shares in? That's muy loco.

As for Glide, in case you haven't noticed it's not 1998.

The reality is, it's the dolts that got sucked in by marketing that need to let go.

** Hats off to 3dfx **

I remember back in the day where I had the Voodoo, Voodoo2 (on my old sony Vaio), and a purchased Voodoo3. The voodoo2 and voodoo3 (which when they first came out WERE good to have) They were like the best at the time.... after that they just went downhill with other companies stepping up to them... one being Nvidia. I never saw it coming. At the time of the voodoo3, I really thought 3dfx had potenial to kick any 3d card companie's ass. Oh well. *me pulls out geforce3 ti200* sigh....

man, i remember the good old Voodoo card days...my first 3D video card was a Voodoo2. That thing was sweet. Then I upgraded to the Voodoo3, and of course that was the sweetest card ever! ah well, gone are the days of 3dfx, and now are the days of Nvidia (oh, and i guess ATI too ;))

Ahh....to this very day, I still love the way a Voodoo 3 3000 played unreal...maybe it was in that psuedo-24 bit color, and the anti aliasing sucked, but damn - the thing never missed a frame.

I actually still have that card in my brother's duron box, and it plays just about everything pretty good. I still have yet to play a game where I can't get decent frame rates at a respectable resolution (although methinks those days are numbered).

Either way, I loved the Voodoo cards. Maybe the nvidia cards at the time had better looking graphics, but they sucked ass at holding a respectable frame rate and delivering smooth gameplay till they got to the first geforce.

With stuff like the new Doom and UnrealII on the horizon, you can bet on it! ;)

To be honest, I'm excited about Warcraft 3 more, but....that's just me. *grin* I think I wasted at least 37.5% of my youth playing WC2, so I figure I might as well continue that trend and play three till six in the morning.

Although I must admit that Unreal II looks beyond tight.

I still got a Voodoo III 3000 in this system. I'm not planning to upgrade it for a long time since I care more about 2D than 3D graphics.

My next card will be a Matrox :)

You guys make me sick with your fond memories :p

If you had to deal with people who don't understand why their "awesome" Voodoo card is either plagued with problems or is simply incompatible with a lot of games that have been coming out then maybe you would understand why I wince everytime I hear the "V" word.

???
Voodoo cards not working with games? Don't hear that one as often as you say....... Most would agree 3dfx had the *best* compatibility around - at least up until NOW.

Ahhh the Voodoo card... I was running a Intergraph Reactor (4meg WOO HOO!) when I first saw the Voodoo in action. Don't get me wrong The Reactor was the stuff with its AA abilities and all, but the Voodoo playing Carmageddon... *sigh*. Those were the days, ATI sucked and nVidia... nWho? I personally liked the Voodoo right up until the end... and as insdav3 said "hats off to them".

Now... well... things are different. There are no hot, new Diamond Monsters on the shelves (May S3 burn for eternity for their transgressions :D), nVidia and ATI are the new contenders and keep producing great products faster than we can say Fill Rates...

Oh well, I guess that being relegated to playing my games on an Radeon 8500 isn't so bad. :p

Life goes on and frame rates go up!

I am waiting for the 3dfx technology to be incorporated into the nVidia cards.

I heard that the GeForce4 will be the first nVidia card to incorporate significant amounts of 3dfx technology.

3dfx was just about to release Rampage when they went bankrupt. Their CEO (what's his name) purposely sold them out, I think. Without such blatant treachery, they could have released Rampage and gotten their business back on track.

Auric,

From your audacious responses to this thread, is there anyway why we shouldn't crown you the proud title of NVIDIOT?

1. The very worst video card I ever owned was an Asus card with the nvidia TNT processor. It was so heinous, and would essentially cause various programs to crash randomly. I hated that card.
2. The next buggiest card I ever owned was (and is) a Geforce2 GTS - a Leadtek card. Don't get me wrong - it's really fast and it looks prettier than a voodoo 3, but it was still buggy till I updated some drivers recently and even then it still brainfarts every now and then.
3. Hands down, the most stable, reliable card I've ever used was a voodoo 3 3000, in my brother's duron box. His computer runs flawlessly, never crashes, and seems to run without a hitch whatsoever. I have yet to play a game that doesn't work on his machine, and work well - and he's been playing RTCW, UT, CS, Halflife, and a bunch of older games which are arguably more buggy than any of those, and it never seems to crash at all.

I have never heard of stability problems with voodoo cards - people bitch and moan about the lack of 32 bit color and the poor anti-aliasing in the voodoo 3's, but other than that, they were (and are) solid as a rock.

3dfx will always be around, their technology reserves are still (AFAIK) untapped. ;)

Folks, sorry to say that but people didn't buy their cards anymore at the end of the day, THATS why they're not around any more. There must have been a reason for this. And this time you can't blame big fat Microsoft or Intel for that.

And I have to admit, I bought a Riva TNT in those days, as did many friends of mine. Can't say I'm sorry.
What nVidia seems to be today 3DFX was in those days.

Just my honest opinion.

<< Uh, they are 0WN3D by nVidia now. WTF do you expect? >>

nVidia does not and never did own 3dfx, they purchased their assets and stock etc.
nVidia has absolutely no say in one goes on the 3dfx website, nor any remaining tech support etc.

<< As for Glide, in case you haven't noticed it's not 1998. >>

Last time I checked FIFA 2002, NHL 2002, Madden 2002, Triple Play 2002, NBA Live 2001, Rugby 2002, Forgotten Island etc. were not released in 1998. GLide is not dead, it may not be the primary API anymore... and there may not be anymore games that are GLide ONLY, but there are still more then a handdful of games that support the GLide API. Electronic Arts still supports GLide in many of their new games and they have pledged to support it until at least 2003.
To say GLide is dead or to imply that no games have used it since 1998 is wholly incorrect.

Mismanagement killed 3dfx, but I don't seem them disappearing anytime soon. MANY people are still working hard on drivers for 3dfx cards, there are at least two groups that I'm aware of that want to revive 3dfx, and their old PCI V5's are still in surprisingly high demand.
