Why can you not spot reduce fat?

Say that you want a flat stomach...

When you do your workout, your abs are using the energy in the cells around it. If you deplete everything available, it goes to the fat cells for the energy. Wouldn't it make sense to pull energy from the closest possible fat cells (ie. fat around the stomach)?

Why does it not work this way?

The energy has to get pumped through your ciculation system.
It will go around a few times before it provides nutrients to the muscles that need it.
Your body will pull energy from the places that will be burned faster, NOT where the energy is needed.

And hell yeah thats why liposuction is popular. Get the problem areas and look good. Then worry about your health.

When your muscles are hungry, they look to the bloodstream, not seemingly nearby fat cells. If needed for energy, the contents of fat cells can be broken down into free fatty acids that can circulate through the bloodstream.

To top it off, some areas have "stubborn" fat, like abs and lower back in men. Due to different receptor types and varying blood supply, certain fat deposits in the body are easier to mobilize than others, and those areas tend to be the first place you see results. The stubborn fat is some of the last to go.
