why can we send a man to the moon and have such high technology equipment, but we can't keep a 10' x 10' space of road from flooding? or at least have a way to drain it quickly if it does flood?

there is a small underpass on my way to work that is right before a bridge used to cross a river and is on a major highway. this road has very heavy traffic usage, but yet when it floods, this 10' x 10' or so underpass renders the whole thing unusable!

also, isn't there a better way to remove snow/ice from the roads?

you'd think someone would have come up with a better way to deal with this stuff.

any other things that seems like they should be easily fixable but never are?

I think I may have made a similar statement in another thread but:

If I had billions of dollars, thousands of the worlds smartest people and several decades, I could probably dump a hunk of metal on the moon too.

New Orleans is the greatest example of that

Or how about all the wiretapping? I mean, we'd probably have caught every illegal act in the country if it wern't for the stinkin "constitution"...

I love this quote that pops up in Civ 4:
"The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of the bureaucracy."

I'm guessing by army you mean the DoD, which is actually closer to 17% ($424B out of $2.5T). Most of the spending is mandatory (interest on the national debt, social security, and medicare/medicaid) which account for $1.5B.

According to some law makers, the reason they don't have enough money to fix the roads is because we are paying less gas tax when we purchase hybrid vehicles, thus they want to add an extra tax on hybrid vehicle owners

Because we rather go to war and mind other people's business than fix our own problem in the home front. USA FTW!
