Do a speed check. Sometime the HD just can't put data out that fast. Secondly, are you sure you haven't got your speed checked at 40x in the Nero settings?

yea i checked in Nero and it wont let me select anything past 40x...as for the HDD, how would i go about doing a speed check? HD tach?

EDIT: just did a speed check and got averaged about 40Mb/s so that should be about 6600 KB/s which is just enough for 48x (6000KBs)

update/reinstall the firmware on the CDRW drive. A few years back, i had a brand new 40x (i think, roughly 40x anyway) Lite-on CDRW. Nero would only burn at a max of 16x. I checked the firmware, it was the next to newest version for that model, flashed to the newest version, burned at full speed.

ugh...i cant find the fware on google for this old POS anywhere...meh...i guess i'll just deal with it, a few seconds of extra wait isnt so bad. Unless of course somebody has the same burner and has the firmware available...

You don't use google to find firmware, go to the Sony site. If no joy, check CDFreaks.com - they usually have links to firmware for most drives both factory and hacked. Many Sony's are actually rebadged LiteOns and you can often flash with LiteOn and LiteOn hacked firmware too.

.bh.

And BTW, I seldom burn CDs at over 32x as the quality of the burn is usually much better - particularly for audio CDs (I might burn those at the slowest speed my drive is capable of) - and the process is much quieter. .bh.

Actually, 48x is 7200 KB/s, not 6000KB/s

1X=150 KB/s
48 x 150 KB/s = 7200 KB/s.

And also, how does 40MB/s translate to 6600 KB/s?

1MB = 1024 KB
40 x 1024 KB = 40960 KB/s

I'm not even sure what could be causing your problem, but a good place to start would be with different CD-R media and a different burning program (try DVD Decrypter for a quick, free program, or you can also check the free software thread in the software board).

hi, when a blank disc inside the drive, u need to hold the eject button till the LED flashes. This enables 52x write. Some stupid noise reduction/safety feature which Sony put into their CDRW drives.

To remove the limit, flash your drive with the appropriate Liteon firmware.

CRX230E = Liteon LTR-52327S v1
CRX230ED = Liteon SOHR-5238S
CRX230EE = Liteon SOHR-5239, unconfirmed whether it's the S or V version

40x is still damn fast. The rest of your computer is probably struggling to deliver the data to it fast enough. I knoiw my dad's 48x burner only burns at 16x. Even though you can select 48x, it still takes the same time to burn as it does at 16x.

Techno Pride's got it right. I've got the same burner. First you have to flash it to SOHR-5238S with the 4S03 firmware, then you can update it with the official liteon drivers for that model.

I found how to do it here:

Just so you know, when you set it to 52x it's WAY louder.
