Linux file server w/ samba, WinXP client. the client is plenty fast, 1.2ghz scsi 10k rpm drive, the client is older but solid, p2 350 redhat 7.2, its got a slower 5400 rpm 80 gig drive. both have 10/100 network cards and are on a 10/100 switch.

max speed I can get transferring files either thru samba network shares or ftp, is 1mb/sec. shouldn't I get more, I mean people download files from the internet at faster speeds than this, and this is direct 100mb switched network. WTF?

edit- also transferring from XP to my win98 laptop tops out at 800kb/sec.. even slower! :( I attributed this to the slower laptop harddrive, but even then I thought it would be faster

Is that 1MB or 1Mb?

Big difference. 1MB per second isn't too bad, tho it's a little slow for a 10/100 network, but you could have poor drivers on one end or something. They should top out at about 6-7MB/sec

1Mb is the speed of some internet connections, you're right and if that's the case, there's something wrong.

Need more info to help much. Does your switch have a 10/100 LED?? is it lit to indicate 100Mbps operation?

What NIC cards?? drivers?? etc..

Could be a buggy switch too...

Been watching the collision LEDs?? They doing much? What trying a program like Qcheck from NetIQ. That's what i use for bandwidth testing.

okay, well its 1MB/sec max. 600-800kBytes/sec average though. realtek chipset pci card w/ ne2k drivers in redhat linux 7.2, smb ez-card 10/100 default XP drivers.

checked the switch, XP is showing as a full-duplex 10/100 link, the linux box is only linking as a 10mb connection. the nic is a Realtek 8029(AS) which turns out to be a only a 10mb full duplex nic. :( dammit! nevermind then I guess, I just need to replace that slow ass nic quick!

1MB / sec is really a pretty good speed for a 10Mbps NIC. :)

But upgrading that will definately fix *that* problem.

So, 1 MB/s = 8 Mb/s, so you're doing pretty well. I'd double check to make sure that RealTek card is really full duplex, however. They didn't make may of those and a lot of SOHO switches have trouble with them. You might need to set it to half duplex if you're having performance problems.

First do a 'ifconfig' and make sure that your network card is running at 100 Mb/s, then check on the XP box, then check your switch LEDs and make sure that the connnections are 100 MB/s.

Only use FTP for benchmarking. SMB has a lot of overhead and will always be slow. Use a large file (greater than 20 MB) to test your transfers.

I get about 6-7 Mb/s on a 100bT switched network over FTP.
