How do you breathe correctly? As mentioned in the newspaper article above, the best oxygen exchanges take place in the lower lobes of the lungs. That's where the "belly breathing" comes from - breathing deep around the navel instead of the upper chest. Standing up straight, sucking in your gut, and sticking your chest out may be great for soldiers, but that is not what you want to accomplish when practicing correct breathing. The specific steps are on the next page, but for now, think about filling up your belly when you take in a deep breath.

Because air tastes good and it gets digested more properly in your stomach as opposed to your chest.

Why breath automatically? Manual breathing is more fun. ;)

This post has been brought to you by the pompous manual breathing association of ATOT.

You are now breathing manually.

You are now blinking manually.

I bet you're feeling itchy too.

Really really itchy. Like just those tingly little itches around your ears, or maybe on your legs.

Yeah, itches for no reason can be annoying.

i get anxiety-like attacks, apparently, or something...

it just started on day, i would focus on breathing and use my chest, trying as hard as possible to draw in a deep breath. And when my body told me I failed, it decided to try and force me to yawn. Not tired... son of a bitch I just did it now too. Argh.
It takes so much effort to tell my body it's acting like it lost a chromosome and to force it to breathe with my stomach/diaphragm. Dammit yawned again. This body is seriously missing some code somewhere.

What do you expect? You're not even beta yet.

I was taught the exact opposite, especially in band. Breathe with your chest (use your diaphram) not your stomach.

I was born in alpha state. It has its perks, but it lacks the maturity of a more stable version. :(

I think you're confusing what it means to breathe with your diaphragm.

Breathing where ONLY your chest rises, notably your upper chest, is a very easy breathing method, but doesn't work very well for gas exchange. Also, over time can strain your back muscles. I've noticed this big time.

Breathing with only moving your stomach is also wrong. But also extremely hard to do, especially if you are doing, well, anything, other than lying on your back.

The correct diaphragm technique will actually see your stomach move very noticeably, but your lower chest will also rise and fall.

You may very well be doing that, but if your stomach isn't moving, you are focusing too much with your chest, which means you are utilizing your diaphragm less than you can be.
Especially in band, I'd imagine proper diaphragm breathing techniques would be crucial, as that helps pull air in like a vacuum, and push it out like.. a reverse vacuum. Very efficiently at that. :)
