I read the book, and loved it. Saw the movie and loved it.

The story rips my heart out, makes me cry, makes me bleed...

I feel it.

But WHY show it the night before Christmas Eve??????

<---thinks someone working for the networks is one sadistic mofo....

Well, run away slave is about to be recaptured by sadistic master but she refuses to let her children be subjected to the abuse...

So she kills her baby and is preparing to kill the rest of her children before they can be made slaves.

The slave master is so freaked out by what she has done and is about to do that he lets her go...

But her baby daughter... "Beloved"... never really leaves.

It is a story about fierce love and pain... it's about the kind of love that rips your insides apart.

The woman who plays the part of Beloved is one hot chick... she was in Mission Impossible 2.

Check it out... it is by Toni Morrison, who is an American treasure.

yup.

It is a ghost story.

The mother has another chance at love in her life so the baby ghost, who has been haunting her for years, manifests in a flesh and blood body. A seductive, manipulative, mysterious creature (as aptly played by that awesome chick whose name escapes me).

It's a very freaky story, but it is damn good literature.

mm.... sounds too freaky for me

so is the baby ghost vengeful or does it understand the mother's plight?

Well, it's complicated... just like the relationship between living mothers and children.

That's why it rips at me so.... it is really hard to explain, but I will tell you that in the end, there is a sense of peace and forgiveness.

The only thing I can figure is that they are showing this tonight so that some people (who don't freak out and change the channel!) will sit through it and somehow get the message of the power of love?

This film touches on the untold story of run away salves. Most people are not able to handle this film because it is not ment to be a piece of entertainment. This movie is difficult to watch however, it is a rewarding experience. It gave me new insights into life, love, and to certain extent, the paranormal. I believe it is among one of the best American films. The cruelty of that era needs to be told no matter how difficult it is to stomach.

LOL!

Well, where I come from.... a family of writers and English Lit majors... it is a masterpiece.

It is definitely not for the general public, that's for sure....

Hmm. Well, I never received training or a formal education of literature but I found Beloved to be one of the absolute best works of literature I had ever read. But I've always thought I was a part of the public-at large. Eh, no matter.

You're not alone. It threw me for a wild ride and I am generally unattached.

That is interesting AND unexpected. My guess would be that it was meant to provide some shock and give people something else to think about except their mundane lives? Many people are so busy during this time, the scheduling people may have thought this would provide an interesting point of view? That or they are twisted, sadistic mofos. ;)

Blasphemy ! It was excellent, IMHO.

Cheers ! :)

Nope, with the superiority your handle suggests and your fine taste in literature, you can't possibly be part of the public at large. ;)

The novel "Beloved" won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction and the author, Toni Morrison has won just about every award, including being only the eighth woman and the first black woman to receive a Nobel Award in Literature.
