Why aren't television shows available for download

factor the download statistics into the neilsen ratings, advertising costs aren't changed...why isn't this being done yet? 😕

is there something i'm missing?

Much easier to fast forward through the commercials on a computer. And if they distribute it in a wrapper or codec that prevents that, it will be circumvented by a third party.

local adverts...

i'm sure it wouldn't be that difficult to include local advertising based on a tracert of the ip downloading

some sort of script that would insert the local ads into the spots normally left blank by major networks...of course i know fvck all about programming, but i'm sure it could be done...

No difference, broadcasters hate TIVO as well. There was a news article not long ago about broadcasters attempting to bypass TIVO and force commercials or outlaw TIVO or something, don't quite remember the specifics.

Thats exactly what I was thinking.
Too easy to ignore or cut the commercial ads altogether.

Thats why TV on DVD is so popular. The network can at least make a tight little profit when they sell for 40-50 bucks a season.

But how will they outlaw walk-to-the-fridge-and-get-a- during commercials?

Yeah, but the same people who would make/use the codec probably already download the shows on their own. The services (ABC started it, but several others are joining) will be used by people who don't really know what they're doing, but don't have a tivo/dvr.
