Why aren't kids a bigger priority?

Most sensible people agree that having a stay at home parent is beneficial for children.

Yet, in most families, both parents work.

If you don't want to take care of your kids or your really into your career or accumulating stuff, why have children?

Average rents in my area are well over 1,500 per month, very few familes can afford to have anybody stay home.

what if you're accumulating $$ so you can support your kid and provide him/her with the things that you didn't have in your childhood? like a safe, comfortable home to stay in, good food on the table and whatnot?

some people that want children can't afford to only have one parent working. Just the way things are. They want to be able to provide for their children. you say 'well then maybe they shouldn't have kids'. Both my parents worked my entire life...i turned out fine.

I would argue that kids that go to daycare and such become better people because they get used to being more social. (broad generalization i know).

Loaded question right from the start.
I can't see this discussion going anywhere

Probably not here in lala land.

That's fairly obvious if you ask me. It's difficult to make ends meet when only one parent works (unless you're raking in the dough). Having a kid is a priority since women can't have kids forever. Also, couples don't want to have a child too late because of the age gap. It'll be hell raising a teenager in your 60s :-D.

In our consumer driven society many times both parents must work to be able to afford the things kids want, like a computer for instance.Unless the dad or Mom is an exec or Dr/lawyer/cpa both work.

Because stupid religions prohibit use of contraceptives and abortions.

The real reason the majority of people can't afford to live off of one income is that they do not manage their money correctly.

My parents raised three kids, bought & paid off a house, & did just fine on one income that didn't go over $40K until I (the oldest) was grown.

yea, my household was kind of similar... we didn't eat out much (except at chinese restaurants)... didn't have cable... old old car... never got anything but water to drink at the restaurants.. never got cereal (that stuff is unusually expensive imo)... never got candy bars ('cept for halloween)... i think americans just don't know how to properly manage their money.

Kids could be the priority more often if the parents made enough to support them both.. but in lots of cases, 2x household income is needed. i certainly would not be able to raise a child, pay for a place to live, and a wife all on my income.. no way. i agree its good for chilldren.. but people do the best they can with what they're faced with. (95% of the time)

That kind of statement is very geo specific. If you tried to live on 40k in NYC, for instance (or, possibly ANY large city) and raise 3 kids you would struggle. Where did you grow up?

I know that living in Miami, making 40k means you end up living in an area where all the houses have bars on the windows to keep the crackheads out.

Way too many people have kids because they see it as the next thing to do in their life..not really thinking about the 24/7 responsibility they have accepted. And so many of these so called "parents" are nothing but undeveloped emotionaly challenged adults hardly able to care for them selve much less raise kids. Get you self a puppy if you want a pet. You prob.can't even handle that.

Which brings me to my question - why did your parents have you?

people's priorities are part of this

my family is very blessed, we live in a low cost of living area, i have a very good job and my wife can stay home with the girls
when the little one starts school, my wife is going back to school, part time

Wouldn't say all Americans. We're living off one income. I paid off my modest home in 12 years, I have no debt, the kids are going to private (Catholic school), and I fully fund a 401K and contribute to IRAs for me and my wife every year.

I'm not a doctor or lawyer either.

I think a lot more people can live on a single income than care to admit it. The fact is, a higher life style and the social stigma of staying home is just more important than their children.

i'm sorry, i could have sworn i put in "for the most part"... meh, maybe i accidentally deleted it when i edited it. but anyways yea, i wanted to say "for the most part". i think you are dead on with your last statement (well for your first two too 😛). they would rather have a nice sedan than stay home and have to "put up" with their children.

People often have two jobs to feed and clothe their children. Before you start talking about "stuff" perhaps you want to generalize less.

Edit-Because Gopunk caught a silly.
