Why aren't all 2.4ghz receiver/transmitters created equal?

I bought a 2.4ghz wireless transmitter and reciever from Radio Shack last week then I bought the same thing (supposed to do the same thing) from X10.com a few days later....

why does the Radio Shack unit produce so much clearer sound than the X10? Even with a microwave running the Radio Shack in very clear compared to the X10 that produces nearly all static with the same microwave usage?

What would account for the sound superiority with the Radio Shack model?

I guess I'll have to send the X10 back. I had high hopes for it because they (X10.com) had a great deal of product to choose from.
