What is really funny is how the blame gets put on ATi and Valve when the blame falls squarely on nVidia's shoulders. Want some theories on WHY HL2 and D3 have been delayed?Originally posted by: DefRef
I've been satisfied with Nvidia cards since the TNT, but the kafuffle surrounding the FX line of cards has been disturbing and annoying - disturbing because a company that's been historically responsive to the community and claims to be in touch has appeared totally out of touch and annoying because the ATI fanboys act like they've attained immortality thru their hardware choices. Over the years, I've had:
Voodoo 1
ATI Rage II
ATI Rage 128 + Voodoo 2
TNT
TNT2U
GF 256 DDR
GF2 GTS
GF3 Ti200
GF4 Ti4400
GF FX 5900 128MB
I built a new rig for HL2 and put what was supposed to be one of the fastest cards in, so these latest benchmarks, skewed as they are by dirty dealings between Valve and ATI, are a legitimate cause for concern. It's hard to believe that Nvidia has become so totally clueless, especially when you consider how many of the howling ATI Fanboys are plugging their mighty (*cough*) video cards into nForce 2 mobos. The "Mine's bigger!" shrieking makes it hard to hear what's actually happening.
Final irony: Nvidia is accused (endlessly) of lying and cheating, but how many still believe that HL2 is gonna be on store shelves Sept. 30th? Who's lying about their ability to hit their self-proclaimed deadline? Valve, that's who! (Games slip, no shame in that, but when's Valve gonna fess up?) Some sites are saying it's not due until FEBRUARY which means the next-gen cards from BOTH companies should be out by then, allowing for a legit apples-to-apples comparison.
Could it be that Valve is trying to FUD people into rushing and buying 9800s for their pimps at ATI NOW as insurance against Nvidia mounting a comeback with the NV40? Just asking?
Beyond3D:The developer of Half-Life 2, Valve, is the first developer to voice their displeasure for the NV3x architecture with such intensity, because it has forced them to write additional codepaths particularly for NVIDIA hardware; thus, costing them time, money, and extra resources. This was something not needed to run on ATI hardware, which is why they entered into an agreement with ATI. The order of the agreement was based on already existing hardware benchmark scores to a marketing agreement, not the other way around as some have speculated.
Note: It?s an interesting fact that of the two most eagerly anticipated games over the next year the developers have had to expand time and effort in creating special, optimised paths for GeForce FX hardware whereas ATI has more than acceptable performance (and with higher IQ) in both of these titles utilising the default path. The release dates for both of these titles have been a constant source of interest - has creating more special rendering paths actually hindered the release of these titles?
