why are yawns catchy?

Haven't read through all the posts, but I heard that yawning was an ancient ancestral thing that cavemen did to let others know they were tired....something like that.

Because people noticed that people in the same room tended to yawn in close succession and came up with the idea that yawns are catchy. They're really not, but since you've heard that they are umpteen-brazilian times, you automatically think about the rule and yawn in response to your thoughts about yawning.

That's my theory and I'm sticking to it
