During the Sotomayor reports going on I heard that about 50 percent of all lawyers are women. Yet, we have one (probably) on the Supreme Court.
And I don't exactly know the number, but like 5 out of 100 in the Senate?
Women make up 50 percent of the electorate.
Over 95 percent of major corporations ceo's are white men.
I'm sure that many, many of the professions in America, like doctors are also mostly white men.

So why is that?

---

This is just flame baiting supposition, and it is going nowhere fast.

Probably for the same reason that European Socialism is so succesful: Superiority

Yes, that was sarcasm.

Asians have a higher average income than whites, blacks and hispanics...
I think most workplaces pay, hire and promote based on performance and credentials.

I don't think there's a big racial or sexist conspiracy; I do know a lot of women that think of their income as supplemental to their husbands and many choose to be stay at home mothers. This might explain the male weighting in professional fields. As for race, mass immigration of hispanics is still relatively recent and most CEOs have 20-30+ years of experience at that level.

To answer your question, the reason is because of history and because women have babies. Women have a much harder time sticking with a professional career than men because a woman has to choose between her career and having a baby. If she chooses to have a baby, then she has to take off work to have it and take care of it right after it is born. This is why men traditionally worked while women stayed home.

You spend money to make money; wealth stays in any group, be it racial or familial.

And as mentioned, many women stay at home. In fact, among our particular circle honestly NONE of the couples we know have a woman working full time. Closest is mrsskoorb who works part-time and the rest either barely work or are entirely stay-at-home.

This was a serious question.
Basically the question has been raised in the Sotomayor debate that she was chosen for her ethnicity and/or her sex.
And many of the things I qouted came from CNN, MSNBC and Fox.
And I didn't make it a racial question. I purposed pointed out that the topic was women and ethnicity.
Why would a thread about the comparative success of women and men in the workplace and politics and adding in race be offensive to anyone.
Or are you saying we are not allowed to ask why such a huge discrepancy in numbers exists?
I just asked why.

Seems perfectly legititmate.

I certainly think that's part of it.
But the numbers are so overwhelming.
And from at least the women I know, they mostly seem to stay in their jobs while they raise their kids.
Especially the last 20 years or so, as it has become important for families to have two incomes.
