I tend toward the freebies myself, but occasionally one comes along that, in the long run, is definitely worth it. For GPS guidance that does not require a data connection (are you listening Google Maps?), Copilot USA is so worth the measly $10 they ask. On a 5" screen, you get for your phone what your would otherwise pay hundreds for in a dedicated GPS device, a la Garmin, TomTom, etc.

FYI Google Maps can do navigation without data, though you will need data to initially setup the route, but then it will track and update you on your route even without working data.

I'm not like that. I generally lean toward the paid versions of things because I don't want to look at ads and they often work better than free apps that claim to do the same thing. I don't like the dinky little time waster type games that thrive on in-app purchases, so that aspect almost never comes up for me. In fact, I like seeing full versions of PC games appear in the app store because I know that they'll exhibit the level of polish and depth that I care about, even though they pretty much all cost $10+. I've been greatly enjoying The Wolf Among Us on my ipad lately.

I know people like the OP though. They look at the prospect of paying for an app almost as an affront to their sensibilities.

"What? Pay for an app? Why I never"!

I just see it as software. I've been paying for software my whole life. I don't want much generally, but when I do I buy it rather than agonize over a measly few dollars. It's not going to break me, after all.
