Not only does Kahleeforneeya have the 6th largest economy in the WORLD, but we are in the top 10 for states that pay more in taxes than we receive in Federal funding...meaning we help support the rest of the country...talk about welfare...MOST 9not all) of the south receives anywhere from $1.02 per dollar paid, to almost $2.00 for every dollar they pay...Maybe that is something that should be changed by Congress. NO state can receive MORE in Federal funding than they contribute...

Californians love that meaningless statistic for some reason. California doesn't exist in a vacuum, it benefits greatly from being part of the US. The US benefits from California, and California benefits from being part of the US.. Just like every other state. Imagine if CA was still part of Mexico, or even if CA was an independent country (that had never been part of the US). It would be nothing compared to what it is now. Oregon on the other hand would be sitting pretty, as it would be the US's gateway to the Pacific - a role that has benefited California immensely.

THIS is why so many Americans can't stand Californians.

To a point, I agree with you...we ALL depend on each other...except for you Kahleeforneeya bashers who hate us...even though we pay more in taxes than most other states do, to the point of supporting many other states...
You hate us, but take our money...just like many foreign nations...hate the USA, but gladly take our money...

Over the history of the state, California has. Because of that, California is now able to contribute as much as it does. The area between Boston and Washington, DC contributes as much as CA, but you don't hear us talking like we carry the country on our shoulders.

I don't know. NYC is also pretty full of it self as well ;)

Though, deservedly so...

But I would say you're wrong, at least in absolute terms consider the huge exponential growth in contributions of late. Now as a percentage over time, maybe...

I wasn't talking about tax dollars... I was talking about contributing to the economy of the country.

But if you want to talk about taxes -
That list is federal expenditures in those states, it's not just money that the federal government gives to the states like welfare. DC is high - not surprisingly - because it is the seat of the federal government. Of course the federal government is going to spend a lot in DC. Maryland is high for the same reason as Virginia - defense contractors.

What that document also tells you is that California's per-capita tax burden is close to the national average, while New Jersey and Connecticut and Massachusetts are off the charts AND they get a smaller proportion of federal spending.

Tougher environmental laws I guess.

I think that's BS.

But it's true. CA laws require special formulations that increase the cost of gas in your state. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

Exactly the cause. California has extremely strict regulations on fuel quality, especially the amount of sulfur allowed in the gas. That requires our own refineries and we cannot "import" gas from other states.

Yes, of course, What idiot family person in their right mind would buy a high passenger capacity all wheel drive vehicle in a state known for high amounts of snow 6 months out of the year and mountainous terrain?

Those stupid bastards!

What SUV model do they drive the Italian Alps?

High amounts of snow for 6 month's?? LOL!!, Much of Colorado is made up of high plains grassland, which is where Denver is. Pay attention in science class and see just how much precipitation we get.

This year we had the worst winter we have had since 1984 and I still made it around in my Corolla. Most of the time though our winters have 5 or 6 days tops where the roads even have snow on them and even at that it's melted by noon and it's not even that bad to begin with.

Next get a clue about these SUV soccer mom's, they don't go up to the ski resorts, they head to the mall and on their other "errands" whille hubby works. Besides I used to make Keystone resort in my little Honda CVCC or we took my friends ugly a$$ montego without problems, we have pavement and plows here.

fvck off and die Amused.

I'd bet MORE. I remember after the Loma Prieta earthquake, back in 89, when they decided that due to the immense costs involved in highway repairs after that quake, and a sizeable one in LA the year before, that the state was going to tack a 25-cent per gallon tax on gasoline, but (and I quote):
only until the work is paid off
then the tax would go away again.

Now I'm not debating that the state highway fund must've taken a HUGE hit from those two quakes, and that the state was well within it's rights to raise taxes to pay off that extra, unplanned debt. But is there anyone here that's naive enough to believe that the debt's not paid off now, 18 years later? Or that the tax is still on gasoline, because they found other uses for it??

Sadly, before that tax (and others) were tacked on, I had an AM/PM mini-mart with an Arco station down the street from where I lived, in Modesto (at the time.......long gone from there now!), where I had been paying (are you ready for this???)...................

$0.63/gallon for regular unleaded, and $0.75/gallon for super unleaded!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, those days are looooooong gone!! :disgust:

Most of the gasoline still come from the gulf coast. The website has load of info. I suggest you guys take a peek at it before making uneducated comments.

According to your chart Denver should be out of gasoline and first to ration.

Technically, it's not rape since you're willingly paying for it. This is more like getting crabs and/or syphilis. Maybe an unexpected pregnancy. ESPECIALLY IN THE ASS!

Supposedly it is "Refiners to blame for rise in gas prices"

My favorite blurb
Rising gas prices hit hard for Andrea Magnum, who lives in Port St. John and works in Titusville.

It costs about $70 to fill up her Ford Expedition now, compared with the $50 she was paying for a fill-up a couple of months ago, Magnum said.

"It's just unbelievable," she said.

Magnum's husband installed new equipment in the Expedition with hopes it will save on gas mileage, she said. Cold air intake, I'd bet. Perfume on a pig

And the family is cutting back in other ways to compensate for the increased expense.

"You've got to cut down somehow, whether it's getting the cheaper groceries or not going out on a Friday night," she said. "It affects your life."

You guys said that last year too and it was under $2/gal in most of the country for almost two months.

BTW, California is paying more for gas than Hawaii right now.

Obviously b/c sweet crude has been trading at 60-62 the last week or so, dropped down to 58 yesterday though. Also the environmental laws about refining, CA gas tax.

Mass transit, compact urban development FTW

Because that has worked so well across the country
Smart Urban Growth is a myth and nothing more than an attempt to control the masses.
