Because those are made up needs, made for profit.
Real men use $0.63 bar soap.

WTF is face wash? Is that different than soap, or at least the stuff most folks call "soap"?

I use Dr Bronner's liquid soap and a 1L bottle @ $10 lasts almost one year.

A lot of people use a face wash (including me) because of acne issues...and regular soap usually makes it worse.

I was at the drug store today because I had to buy body wash, face wash, toothpaste, etc. All the face wash brands were $9+ and they all had the same ingredients. All the body washes were $5+ and they are all the same ingredients. Why are these so expensive? Surely someone could come in and charge half the price and still make big profits.

The worst thing I have ever seen at a drug store I saw today though. Axe Deodorant was $7.50

Have you ever heard of generic (CVS, Duane Reade etc) brand products? They are exactly what you're looking for.

When you are student living without a car, going to the Walmart 15 miles away is kind of difficult. The grocery store here is also the same price as the drug store.

Amazon.com. Bam.

I use T-Gel, so I know your pain.

As for bar soap and shampoo, I buy the Generic branded Tea Tree Oil stuff from Sally Beauty.

It lasts a month or more, so it's really not that bad...

the first step in recovery is acceptance. good job! :p

i accept that i smell better with my fancy shmancy body wash than a MANLY bar of soap. i guess back in the 80s, you were probably considered gay if you used scented soap like Zest and Irish Spring... lol

Facewash is usually consisted of an active ingredient(s) or chemical substance that's been engineered for specific purposes, be it from acne, dermatology blemishes and the sort like that.

Soap is just plain soap. It does nothing except remove excess oil and dirt/other stuff is removed by the rubbing motion. There are no therapeutic properties, you're left with your own body to do that.

It's because all of that crap, aside from toothpaste (very cheap by the way) and deodorant (also cheap), is unnecessary luxury metro stuff and are marketed and priced as such.

OK, very basic economics here.....

If someone is willing to pay for it, they will pay for it.
Why do sodas cost 12 cents to make and sell for a dollar fifty?
People are willing to pay for it.
Why do PS3's cost 700 to make and sell for 400?
People are not willing to pay for it.
(Of course, if they are dumb enough to pay ten dollars extra for EVERY SINGLE GAME and end up spending thousands more than they need to, its all good for Sony. Net profit.)

Understanding this basic concept means the difference between success and failure in the business world.
The main reason CEO's of major companies send millions into Swiss bank accounts is the average American cant figure this shit out. Same deal with big ticket items like houses and cars.
