It seems like everywhere I go on the net, I seem to run into a bunch of jackasses! I was checking out the for sale forum over at "Chubbywallet" and almost every thread had a post from some jerk ridiculing the price and talking about how they can get "X" so much cheaper. Threadcrap City!! I then was just down on Ubid checking out their laptops, and some jerk bid super high prices on every single auction. He must have bid 50K on laptops. And no, I doubt he intends to purchase a 2 year old refurbished laptop for $2500 each!! What happened to civility in our society?? Is it because we can't spank our kids anymore for fear of a getting sued? :|

Check out this nice little post:
"HAHAHA youve got to be kidding on the 1400 price for the notebook. You get can BRAND NEW, cheaper, and BETTER notebooks for LESS than that. And yes, I am talking about Dells.

BTW, how much did you pay for ur new 8200? Just curious LOL "

More then likely. Americans are spineless. We dont disicpline out kids. We sue for ANYTHING we can. America has went from the land of the free and brave to the land of the spineless and greedy. Its sad though. I mean come on, sueing McDonalds because the doffee is hot?? And having Social Services take my kid because I spanked them? (spank = disipline, not punch the hell out of...)

ok wtf, how did you get from that to spanking?

i mean, it could be because we live in a society where many parents don't know how to discipline their children without resorting to violence.

Yes, I'm sure all Americans fit under that catagory.

I am not saying that "to spank or not to spank" is the real problem, but jeez, this is getting ridiculous.......

yeah, spanking has something to do with thread crapping? IMHO I think people who are thread crappers are kids who got spanked/abused a lot and harbored these vengeful feelings. As a child, I wasn't disciplined that much, but I know when to be courteous.

They don't have to worry about getting their asses kicked over the net as they would if they had said it in real life..

This is what happens when you provide the means and the opportunity to someone under the cover of anonymity. The "evil" inherent inside them surfaces that much more easily because they no longer have a fear of being "discovered"

yea i have to agree with that... also there are some people where this is their only social outlet. in other words, they can't be in any other social environment.

Because people who are borderline jerks anyway feel there are few consequences to being a total jackass online. It does tie into what Shockwave said.

Look at Gopunk's sig. When people can remain faceless through a medium like the internet, they are free to let their more vile traits shine through because there is no fear of consequence.

amnesiac is on to something here. His reasoning is the very reason I have come to question anonymity on the net.

Our Constitutional right to privacy does not cover anonymity, nor should it. I don't think the net will be able to grow much further with people having the ability to be anonymous. It will just eat itself alive.

I think people should be responsible for their actions and words. As such, they should be identifiable. Can you imagine how fast the net would become civil if people were forced to stand behind their words?

Well, that's just one side of the coin. I know there are convincing arguments for anonymity, and I wont say I'm 100% sure in my opinion. However, with time, I am becoming more and more sure that anonymity on the net should end.

You know the thing that really disturbs me is that it isn't just on the net. Look at the rash of child murderers we have had in the last 10 years.....I can't remember anything like that when I was growing up.

The Internet's anonymous. People can say whatever they want without fear of getting killed or hurt or anything. I guess some people just choose to exercise that "right."

Some would say it ties into SHOCKWAVE, as opposed to what i said....:D

Eh, I make no illusions to who I am. I know what I believe, and I stand by it. Sure, I wont judge you if you believe differently or act differently. I'll just a happily party with everyone here as people who think l;ike I do. Its when we discuss our views I turn bitter, because I cant believe people let this stuff go.
I mean look at examples....

Illegal aliens requesting funding. That story posted here. Out in Oregon.
Sue Mcdonalds because their food made people fat.
Sue tobacco companies when they print warnings on the pack.
Take children because of spanking.
Property siezure for small amounts of marijuana (Ok, that was to just spark reaction :D )
Families of illegal aliens sueing states for not providing watering points for illegal aliens.

And on and on and on. And we wonder why the rest of the world hates us? Because we are SO spoiled, we ALL act like rich kids. Every one of us. Theres people in this world who wonder where their next meal is coming from, we wonder what we're having for our next meal. And then, if we cant have EXACTLY what we want, we get all mad and complain. We take everything for granted. So, why not be a jerk on the internet? Its the spoiled kid mentality.

well... child murder is most likely not simply the result of "jerks". and there are plenty of horrible things in the past. albert fish... ted bundy... jack the ripper... jeff dahmer... etc, etc, etc.

frankly, i think the vast majority of what you are talking about can be attributed to bad parenting (not lack of spanking though). we have changed into a society where both parents work, which makes it less likely that children will get the same amount of attention as they have in the past. children are much less a focus today then they were 50 years ago.

A: A lot of Republicans have internet access.

What's your excuse, then?

Amused,

Your stance against anonymity is laced with irony, unless you are indeed one Homer Simpson.

:D

On a side note, my guess is that the majority of the internet is not republican. For certain half of it is below voting age or apathetic toward politics, and the other half is missing the wieght of the deep south.

I don't think all the jerks out there are really jerks in real life. It's easy to personify yourself any way you like online.
