Why are there so many asian(more so chinese?) christians?

My theory: There are many reasons.
1. christianity is not native to asians (whereas arabs 99% muslim, India 80% hindu) that * could* mean they were persecuted in their country, and U.S gave them asylum (easier to immigrate perhaps)
2. Jewish do not convert outside their race. Same for Hindus.
3. Filipinos are mostly catholic.
4. You are probably generalizing on 5-10 people you know out of 5-10 million Asians in U.S.

yes, i am generalizing on people that i see...but it seems like every chinese person i meet is either christian or not religious.

<- non-Christian Chinese. Weathered through 6 years of Catholic junior high and high school and came out a practicing capitalist. 🙂

Well as far as the USA the groups have always been more Christians, think about it

Filipinos - Huge Catholic Communities due to the Spanish conversions
Koreans - pretty much the only area evangelicals/protestants ever had real successes with. Most Koreans who come here are Christians already

As for other groups - I visited a Chinese Evangelical Church a couple of times....and they are VERY into converting as much of China as possible. Even in the church They had a power point presentations which included slides of populations growth (scaring the people by talking about how many Muslims lived in China and showing pics) of each religion broken down through statistics, etc. They talk about what they have done (and they pour a TON of money trying to convert people)
Personally I was a little disgusted with the whole concept of "harvesting souls"....the friends I went with thought that every Church was always so goal oriented about converting other people and suprised that I've never encountered that no matter what Mosque I went to.

I also think there is simply the element of being Western and influencing the people and how they think.

But in terms of the other religions...Judaism doesn't actively seek converts - Islam does, but not in the ultra proactive method that Christianity uses (its more like ask me and I'll talk...rather than find you) - Buddhism will have "missionaries" but they do things through example to show how they live rather than again, be so proactive (again notice how the Christian groups that are sky rocketing are the ones looking for many "souls to harvest" - hence its the evangelicals who are really growing)...I have no idea how Hinduism does it - but I'll assume it isn't great if its focused largely in the Indian Subcontinent (Although I have seen plenty of guys at my campus do advertising and hand out copies of the Bhagavid Gita (spelling?) which does a good job of getting the essence of hindiusm compared to the other thousands of texts they have (or so I'm told by some Hindus 😉)

Asia used to be the hip place for the missionaries to go to.

A bit of both of these.

I believe there are more Korean christians than Chinese christians, in the US and as a whole. And there are probably as many Filipino catholics as well.

Worldwide, however, there are far more muslim asians than christians.

Are you korean? Cuz I'm chinese and all I see are chinese christians. Korean christian... what a rarity 😛

i've noticed this too and i would have to agree with magomago. i actually have a few disagreements with lyssword, but i could be wrong.

1. arabs aren't 99% Muslim. i would agree with >90% but nowhere near 99%. i can see 80% of india as Hindu though (maybe even 70%) because of their Muslim and Buddhist populations.
4. i've actually noticed this, too. i believe the total number of Muslims in china total to about 50 million, but i have MAYBE seen 5 chinese Muslims in america and i'm a practicing Muslim so that should mean something.

anyways, i agree with the other points lyssword made and magomago's points. to work off of lyssword's first point, i think not having a "native" religion allows for them to more easily switch to a different belief (from athiest to religious...going from religious to religious seems to be a tougher transition). now the reason Christianity would be a prime candidate is, imo, the easiest of the major religions to practice (in no way do i mean disrespect). i'm not going to get into details as i am no religion expert but from my experiences, Christianity in general seems to be the easiest major religion to practice.

anyways, just my 2 cents

Korean Christians are everywhere- goto NYC and you'll find old abandoned churches deserted by white people turned into Korean presbyterian meeting places.😀

come to southern california.

Missionaries--you'll find plenty of Christians in places like China and Vietnam. If I had to guess I'd say that Christian Asians might be more attracted to the United States than other Asians and therefore you have a disproportionately high amount of them here.

There's a lot more Korean christians than there are Chinese christians. I've never met a Korean who wasn't christian.
