Why are there one way streets?

I love the one ways in Downtown phoenix...makes things SOOOOO much faster. One road has 4-5 lanes going into downtown, another has the same going out. Go to a baseball game downtown and you are out of the city and on the freeway in no time. The only time you sit around is in the parking garage.

I find it easier as well to pull out of a drive way or a parking complex.

it keeps the flow of traffic going. it may be inconvenient but there are a lot less stop and go situations with one way streets.

I like them too. I really like the feeder/access/frontage roads that run parallel to the interstate.

When to many cars drive in one direction, the reaction from their acceleration interferes with the normal rotation of the earth. Then these guys (International Earth Rotation Service) consult with local and regional transportation authorities to re-route roads to bring things back into balance. Sometimes this requires one-way streets.

Salt Lake City is the same.

Going to the freeway and getting off the freeway are one-way 5 lanes across

1) To help control traffic flow.
2) To reduce congestion.
3) To make it more difficult to navigate.
4) To make it more likely to get lost in a new city.

It effectively doubles the number of lanes. Also, you don't have to wait for oncoming traffic to pass before you turn left.

Imagine a very busy road. These roads are often 3 lanes since that is all that can fit between older exisiting buildings. Thus you have one lane going in each direction and a center left turn lane. Then one block over you have the same thing. Result: 2 lanes going one direction and two lanes going the other direction.

If instead you make them one way, you suddenly get 3 lanes going in both directions. 50% more traffic in the same space!

Plus traffic lights are easier to handle so there are shorter waits.

To make it so you don't have idiots making left hand turns and blocking traffic/creating accidents.

Sometimes there just aren't enough two-way steets available in stock so they have to use one-way streets instead.

Reduces wait at red lights significantly and less likely to have morons stuck in the intersection for the entire time cross traffic is trying to get through.

If you're ever in NYC you'll notice the 1 way streets don't have any problems with left turns - this is important because rush-hour in midtown is caused by too many 2-way streets close together - people trying to turn onto the avenues from the streets (and vice versa) cause major holdups. Avoiding 34th, 42nd, 59th should be priorities for anyone in Manhattan - 2-way streets are a necessary evil, but an evil nonetheless.
