Question Why are there no large 5K monitors?

I have a 4K 43" monitor and love it. But am wondering why there are no large 5K monitors. I see plenty of wide monitors, and some 27" 5K monitors. But nothing in what I believe is an ideal pixel density (for me anyways) which would be around a 50" monitor.

So why don't we see any large 5K monitors?

Probably the same reason we don’t have large 3:2 aspect ratio monitors: not many manufacturers, and not enough perceived demand to justify their development And production.

I don't see the point. Too little increase in pixels and as far as density goes, scoot backwards a little from the monitor. As OlyAR15 stated, not enough demand.

^ Guess I was assuming you meant a 21:9 ratio, only 33% more and still 2160 vertical while I find vertical more of a limit.

How about the opposite, just move a smaller 5K monitor closer? I couldn't live with that because I use my desk for other things, but some might be okay with it.

I would hate to think how close I'd have to sit to a 27" 5K monitor to make out every pixel.

You are right, there doesn't seem to be demand for it. Even the 4K 43" monitor market is sparse. I recall many years ago buying my old 27" monitor that was 2560x1440. It was cheap enough for something I knew I wanted to replace before I bought it. There weren't any good options for 4K 43" monitors back then.

The market for 5k monitors is extremely niche as far as I know - largely to content creators that need to be able to display a full 4k frame/video on screen at 1:1 and still have room for UI/window/etc for the editing application.

I assume 8k TVs has a chance at becoming more of a commodity product within the next few years. Honestly I’m surprised even the 4K TV took off as I didn’t think the average viewer was that discerning.

For your use case I wouldn’t rule out a 55 inch 8K TV and use DPI scaling to put it at your appropriate pixel density. Just very luck of the draw whether a TV panel ends up being a suitable monitor (flexible return policy says hi) Have a Samsung 43” 4k that works surprisingly great and puts my LG 4k monitor to shame especially for the price difference.

At 43” are you using 100% DPI scaling? Or 125?

EDIT: For some further context I see TVs generally become affordable “first” for a given resolution. Higher volume and also it’s easier to manufacture since the pixels aren’t packed as dense as the average sized monitors.

4k monitors only recently became affordable with a wider spread of options in the past couple years for instance while 4k tv have been dirt cheap for a while

so at least we can look to TV market to maybe predict future trends
