Why Are There No ACTIVE DisplayPort to HDMI cables?

So, we all know that for Eyefinity to work with 3 or more monitors, at least one must be either running via a pure displayport connection, or an ACTIVE conversion from displayport to VGA or DVI.

However, what I find strange is that there is NO mention of ACTIVE displayport to HDMI on AMD's website. They have a PASSIVE section, but no active.

Anyone care to explain why?

There's no point. You only need the active conversion when you move to the equivalent of DL-DVI bandwidth. DP++ can send out single link DVI/HDMI signals through a passive adapter. The overwhelming majority of HDMI monitors either don't need the bandwidth HDMI 1.3/1.4 has, or cannot use full HDMI 1.3/1.4 bandwidth due to hardware limitations.

An active DP -> HDMI adapter has no purpose. Nothing uses it, and nothing needs it.

I my case, there is a big reason...Eyefinity 1x3.

My monitors only have HDMI and VGA. With Eyefinity, one output must come through an active DP connection.

I don't want to go through the conversion to analog VGA and lose the two way, digital nature of the connection.

So, I'd need an active HDMI connection coming through the DP.

What card do you have?

Use two adapters; DP -> DL-DVI, DVI -> HDMI.

Yes, I understand that I can do it with two adapters. Those adapters are not cheap.

My question, though, is why isn't there an active DP ---> HDMI cable or connector?

Pardon? Not cheap...? A DVI - HDMI adapter is probably less than $5... And the theoretical active DP -> HDMI adapter would cost the same as active DP -> DL-DVI adapters.

Because the vast majority of monitors in the world don't need it, or can't use it... Your situation is a subset of a subset of a subset of situations that could actually use it.

Actually, just read Wiki and they claim that nothing uses dual link HDMI.

Yeah, Dual link HDMI is another beast entirely. Nothing uses that. Dual link HDMI is not necessarily analagous to Dual link DVI though. Weirdly enough.

lots of ADP>DVI will not then work with dvi > HDMI cables

I have 3 different adapters that will not work that way, with a few different cables, both OEM from AMD cards, and from monoprice(the cables, the adapters are accell, bizlink, and XFX)

the main reason why you would need said adapter/cable is that, some monitors are VGA/HDMI only

and we'd rather not use VGA

OP

zotac makes a Mini DP input, dual HDMI output Active adapter

http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=ZT-MDP2HD

its limited to 1920x1080P per HDMI
