<< what the hell is a midget submarine? >>

It's a one/two-man submarine not meant for fighting, just sneaking a few in. There were several found on the pacific coast during the second WW before the attack on Pearl Harbor. One example was of something that my grandfather found in the hills in NW Oregon as a boy. He was hiding from his brother when he came across a strange looking box that was sitting with a direct view of the skies over the Portland airport. When the authorities were notified, the box was taken and found to be relaying information about when planes arrived/left Portland. Supposedly one of those migit subs made it away from a fleet or something, landed, planted it, and the operator disappeared into the population. The authorities ran all over the hills looking for more (several more were found). The sub was found stashed at the beach. My aunt has the write-up in the paper with my granddad's picture :)

Conspiracy theories are like mathematical conjectures.

They do not have the reputation that a proven theorem would, which would make them authoritatively convincing.

Therefore, a conspiracy theory either stands on the reputation of the person who formulated it (much like conjectures, as in Euler's Conjecture) or the appeal of the conspiracy theory to reason and common sense in the context of available, verified, and relevant information (much like conjectures, as in Fermat's Conjecture before it was proven).

Of course, most conspiracy theories are formulated by fruitcakes with little to no appeal to reason and common sense in the context of available, verified, and relevant information, so they get the reputation they deserve.
