Why are there an extra button at the bottom of shirts?

Yes. There are usually two different sized buttons: one for the collar and one for the shirt.

it's not always just two buttons, some clothing comes with a bag of buttons and even the threads you'd use to repair the garment ...never got a needle yet though.

Yes, there is one extra button. On some shirts, you will see a extra hole, so that if you loose one on the shirt, you can replace it
