Why are there 32 bit Vista?

My original thought was that the 64bit Vista would also run on 32 bit architecture, but apparently they made a 32bit version also? Why do you think this was done?

The hardware has to support the 64 bit version, they can't 'make' a 64 bit version that also runs on 32 architecture.

But you can run 32 bit Vista on a 64 bit architecture machine...

64 bit machines are backwards compatible, 32 bit machines are not forward compatible...
