Ive always been curious as to the reasons behind this. If we are the only country competing in it, how can that be the World Champion?

Please enlighten me... :)

1) No other country plays American style footbal

2) the NFL allow players from all over the world to play the game if they are qualified.

3) No one has challenged the assertion.

4) Some NFL games are played outside the United States.

The same reason the winners of the World Series are called World Champions.

I do see your point that the rest of the world plays a different style of football. What about the Europe League though? and the CFL?

minendo: but at least in baseball, there are some teams in canada.

Sorry, Dont think im trying to belittle the sport, im honestly just curious.

Well if the best teams in the CFL Or NFL Europe were to play the Lions they would lose about 99% of the time. The NFl is unquestionably the best Football talent in the world - WORLD CHAMPIONS!

Your arguement would be better served for baseball where the Japanese All-Stars accually are competitive against the Americans that go Over!

Players that don't get drafted end up in the CFL...

Players that get drafted in the late rounds or just aren't coming around like they should (plus some other undrafted people) go to NFL Europe (kinda like the minor leagues in baseball)

The NFL is simply the pinnacle of talent in Amercian Football. So whomever is the champion there is the best in the world at it.

NFL Europe is the minor leagues for the NFL here.

THe CFL plays a God Awful version of football that is radically different in some respects from the American game. The Canadian game is more geared to the pass with a much larger field and 3 downs (which effectively ruins the running game. Also, the CFL is populated with lesser players than the NFL. That is why the play in Canada, not the US where they can get paid - big time.

That is why the Super Bowl Winner is called the World Champon.

Hmm, actually "American football" is Canadian football. The CFL is the oldest professional sports league in the world!

Actually I'm not entirely sure about my first statement, anyone know the alleged beginings of football? :)

It's baseball that drives me nuts... why the hell are we World Champions when teams are only from US & Canada?

With football, I can understand, since u guys are right, probably no one else in the world can beat the US in that sport... but with baseball, at least Japan has a very good chance...

If we're the only one playing it, then there's no one in the world better than our best team...

From what I saw, American football developed out of soccer and rugby and was first played in the eastern US using some tame rules. Real professional football began in 1895. Google has a bunch of sites on Football's beginnings. I'm not that much of a football fan though, so I'm not going to read it, but it's origin's are British and American.
