Why are the opinions of ATOT so wacked out?

Why are people on ATOT so messed up in the head with their views on society etc?

I mean, this is a computer/technology website/forum. I assume that's what brought 99% of people here. Why the hell are so many people out of their minds?

Are people trolling? Do people really believe the shit they spew? What is it? The water supply or something?

I'm hoping for serious answers, but I'm not expecting them...

Dude, I wonder that myself. I like a lot of the people here, but it's all given me a very poor world view. I figure the people here are smarter than the average bear, being a tech forum and all, and that's just fuckin' scary.

I agree. But then again, lots of the people here are young, dumb, and ignorant. I think it's part of Internet society.

I take it you are wondering how a computer/tech website can have so many people who argue that the American internet speeds are fast enough and that we don't need to keep up with the rest of the world?

Yeah, the people here are wacked out.

It scares the hell out of me also. I try to convince myself that people aren't really like this, but I think they are, and worse

I guess age can be a factor. but how about all the people who aren't young enough to use that as an excuse? plenty of older people on the forums. Why would ATOT attract so many dumb or ignorant people?

Could be the raging nerd complex. Let's face it, most nerds are not someone you want to know in real life...no..wait...

It's weird, because most of the opinions here go against what my friends, and myself, believe (besides the common sense stuff). I've considered getting new friends, but they seem to be doing alright... it must be you, not me.

It's a technology board. Lots of people here have this mentality, "It cannot be that way because that is not how I ever seen it".

I think the problem is two fold. Techies, by nature are extremely opinionated and usually very vocal about their opinions. They've been left out for most of their lives and when they become a professional who is respected and looked up to, they get more vocal and sometimes more extreme (If you don't believe me take a Cisco certification class and tell me the instructors are not egotistical).

Added to this is the fact that I've seen the quality of posts and of this entire forum fall in the past few years as older members have kind of retreated away with all of the stupid shit that younger members are posting. I'd like to see better policing of stupid topics, and even of stupid posts like "I like Pie" and "This thread is now about waffles". I think if that were done and stupid people were prevented from posting just to up their post count we'd improve the quality significantly.

Now if you'll excuse me I'll be over on Reddit for actual news and a little sanity.

I dunno. There's nothing wrong with silly shit on an OT board. I don't generally participate in the really dumb stuff, but it doesn't bother me that it's there. I just filter it out, and keep on going. The only thing that bothers me is stupid replies to serious threads, and it doesn't bother me that much, but people should learn a little more self control.

Everyone is a techie of some form these days, it's not like it's an exclusive club. As a result, you get a larger pool of people on these forums. It's probably only about half of the people here who actually work in IT.

I've mentioned anandtech to people who I figured wouldn't have a clue, and many know the site. I'm sure some stumble upon it googling for consumer electronics info, see the off topic area and get sucked in.

I'm just happy the mods let us get away with being nutty. A lot of forums I'm on are censored much more, and it usually makes the place suck.

The ones you read arguing their opinions are the ones who are extreme (or are trolling).

The rest, that you don't see posting about wacky shit, are the ones who are moderate and either aren't passionate enough about their opinion to argue it or assume they won't be changing minds anyway.

It's like the people who think that all cops are corrupt power tripping pricks because that's all they ever see in the media. The reality is while there are definitely corrupt, power tripping pricks who are cops, that doesn't represent all cops.

The reality on this board is that there are definitely some /b/-surfing pedo fuckwits who are posters, but that doesn't represent all posters.

I find this thread amusing, given I recall OP being one of the more vocal proponents of the "10 year old girl that killed herself due to bullying should have just manned up" philosophy in another thread, which sadly seemed to be the majority opinion.

That said, I like mizzou often post things that are at the very least hyperbolic versions of my actual opinion...or are outright made up. When I can't come up with one of those, I just fall back on dick and fart jokes.

P&N is the worst *cough* moonbeam *cough*... i still have no idea how that guy has an elite title.

at least in OT we are relatively civil, much more moderate, and don't troll the crap out of each other unless there's lulz to go around for all.

I just imagine people are more willing to voice their opinions. When I'm out with friends our discussion doesn't really turn to the dying 7 year old being taunted or a guy's house burning down because he didn't pay the firefighter fee. Sure, sometimes issues come up and we disagree, but generally we'll leave it at that instead of getting into a flame war. Agreeing to disagree online doesn't seem to happen.

I'll assume your post refers to the extremist opinions we sometimes see, but how about moderate ones? Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean they have a messed up view of society. Really, it's too easy to judge others on the internet and try as I might to attack opinions rather than people, I often find myself guilty of labeling other posters. It's just that usually I have the sense to keep it to myself instead of stirring things up.

Once we have rejected the words of Jesus, our moral compass spins madly and our opinions hit the net like raisins shot out of our nose.
