Why are the IRQs I set in BIOS not showing in XP?

HI,
Ive been trying to change some IRQs in the BIOS, but the changes ive made dont show up in Windows XP, IE, I change my Audigy Soundcard from a shared IRQ in the BIOS, but Windows still says its on the old IRQ, the one before the change was made.
Does it matter if IRQs are shared in the BIOS? and why are the the IRQs in the BIOS set to different things than in Windows? IE my Audigy is set to IRQ 8 in BIOS, but its set to 11 in Windows.....
Can anyone help me with this??
Thanks

That's because (a) shared IRQs are perfectly fine and you shouldn't manually fiddle with what BIOS knows best and (b) because IRQ8 is hardwired to the real time clock in _ALL_ AT compatibles. BIOS has been forced to do as you said, but XP was kind enough to correct that crass mistake.

Who'll help? Well how about letting the BIOS and OS do their work? The SB!Audigy did work just fine before, didn't it?

Hi,
thanks for reply,
No, it seems slow to respond, when i'm testing the sound card nothing happends for a few seconds, as before it work right away.

How i changed the IRQs in BIOS was to take them off of auto, and put them on an spare IRQ. This made no differenice to the problem, so I returned them to Auto.

oh about the IRQ numbers, it wasnt irq 8....sorry me bad...... In BIOS it was set to IRQ3, i change it to IRQ 7, which was not in use. But in windows it was set to IRQ 14, this did not change at all.
thanks for your help.

the problem all started after upgrading my video card from a geforce 3 to a geforce4 4600. My system was fine beforce, but now there is something wrong, but I cant seem to see what it is.
everything seems to work, but my soundcard is slow to respond now.

... and it didn't occur to you that it might be a problem of the item you changed? Like the graphics card eating too much CPU power?

It's not about how the graphics card performs - it's about how much of total CPU and system bus time it uses to achieve that. There's a surprisingly low upper ceiling to this, especially with those Creative soundcards that need lots and lots of PCI bus bandwidth to function properly.

hi,
thanks for reply.
What would your advise be ? Would getting a faster CPU help?

Your 1.7 P4 is fine. Try putting the sound card either in slot 2, 3, or 4 because the chance of sharing an IRQ for the Audigy will go away by using one of these pci slots. The Audigy usually has issues with sharing IRQ's as have older Soundblaster cards. I have my Audigy in slot 4 and it works fine with the TI4600 card also in the system.
