Why are the cars bombing along doing 85+ beaters?

On my way back from school to home I noticed most of the cars passing me were rusted out nasty cars. Old corsicas, luminas, pickups, civics, etc. All looked beat to within an inch of their life. How come I don't see more nice cars blowing past everyone?

Drive faster. Then nobody will pass you.

Tell that to the BMWs, Mercedes and Porsches 'bombing' along the Autobahn.

I know lots of people up north that have winter "beaters" that they drive until there is not going to be any more salt on the roads.

Yep,
Winter Beaters FTW.

This was my first winter that I didn't have a "Beater" available, but we lucked out here, no really bad weather all winter.

So when it breaks down they can at least coast to a garage?

Maybe it's got something to do with that stretch of road having an unusually high percentage of college students who are more likley to a) have a beater and b) speed?

Probably because they're scummy people with no insurance and warrants out for their arrest. Why wouldn't they drive fast too?

Heh, guess that part was little misleading. I was driving home from school, on break, it was 290, and 495 where I was seeing the most craptastic cars. I must have seen 4 or 5 on my way through Worcester.

If I had a winter beater I don't think I would be driving it that fast, these cars looked like they were going to fall apart. **shrugs** well at least they got in front of me quickly so when they finally do bite it they don't take me with them.

The autobahn is built for speed. U.S. highways are TERRIBLE.

Because the people with those sorts of cars feel they have the most to prove.

For a week or so I drove a 1987 Volvo 240GL with something like 350,000 miles. It was nice to know that I can cause $100,000 worth of damage and only be out $400 tops.

You sure about that? I think many would be to differ. Just because a car isn't worth a lot, doesn't mean it can't be taken care of. Yeah, the body might not be in the best shape or the car may just not look all that great, but for many people it's simply a tool with a purpose. They will take care of their car for 20+ years so that they don't have to buy a new one, it's the best way to get the most utility out of a car for your money.
