The AMSA supports a single payer universal healthcare system, and disbanding all private insurance companies, while the AMA is completely against that. The AMSA gives more to democrats, while the AMA gives more to republicans. The AMSA holds a far more negative view of big pharma than the AMA.

So why the major difference, when they are similar organizations.

AMA is a union with the sole goal of increasing the wages of its members.

AMSA = poor, overworked students.
AMA = well paid doctors.

Well, seeing as i'm now in the US health industry (clinical researcher for psychopharmacological studies), and i haven't even moved to Boca yet, i'm being flown first class and given red carpet treatment (ie dinners that cost over $1k) to Las Vegas and New Orleans in the next few weeks to meet with big pharmas investigators, i'll say i know why. I think once the big pharmas reach the students, they'll change their mind.
