1) so they waste gas
2) AND aren't safe

as for sports cars, they're a waste of gas true. but nowhere near as lethal as an SUV since they don't have 250% momentum "quad damage" bonus. plus the middle-aged balding semi-impotent man behind the wheel of a sports car is more responsible since he is going thru is mid-life crisis but necessarily wanting to end it. while SUVs are driven by egocentric inexperienced youngs that think they're invincible.

1) so they waste gas

complete bull.

take your sports car, lets use the mustang (see, im not GM biased!) it weighs 3450 lbs or 1547 Kg.
your typical SUV, lets use the Tahoe. it weighs 6500 lbs gvw 2wd or 2948 kg.

now, take your comfortable cruising speed in both. tahoe, i would say you are comfortable around 70 mph or 31.29 m/s (meters)
for the mustang, i would say you could comforably cruise at 90mph or 40.23 m/s

now, 31.29m/s * 2948kg = 92242N
and 40.23m/s * 1547kg = 62235N <--- thats a HELL of a lot of force, anyway you look at it. and yes, that is assuming 90-0 in 0sec. flat.

250% momentum damage? more around 67% more force.

so, because SUV's are made higher, they make themselves unsafe? hmm, why dont cars go higher, then it would be equal. think of it both ways.

middle aged, balding men drive sports cars, true, young teens drive mustangs, because they are cheap. middle-aged balding men also drive SUV's, my father drives one, most of my uncles drive them. you cant say young ppl only drive them.

and rollovers, ok, so certain suv's have a high center of gravity.

MIKE

Did you fail high school physics? Kinetic energy = (m * v^2)/2

SUVs travel just as fast as sports cars on the freeway where I live.

Because SUVs are ugly, slow, unsafe, and they block visibility.

Add to the fact that the drivers are usually careless pricks who think that b/c they are bigger they can do what they want. And don't forget that the wonderful SUV's bumpers are much higher than normal cars so that those of us with cars get to have the SUV to come over top of our bumper and into our backseat or our windshield in an accident. And finally, most SUV owners/drivers have absolutely no concern for other drivers and only care about themselves and this self-centeredness shines through in the vehicle they choose to own and drive. Oh ya, and some of them guzzle gas too.

edit: see above response (maybe joking, maybe not) - point is most SUV drivers are self centered asshats who care only about themselves and their safety.

Nice load of generalizations. I have a mid sized SUV and some asshat in a minivan almost creamed me this morning on my way in to work because he wasn't watching where he was going and was driving way too fast. I was happy to be in the SUV in case he did plow into the back of me. As it was he locked up a wheel or two stopping just inches from my bumper. Fvcktard.

I get about 15mpg city and 18 or so highway-on oxygenated CA gas. My wife's '03 Maxima get's about 18 city and 22-23 highway. Ain't much difference.

I will agree, around where I live there are big semi's hauling coal day and night on the freeway and people in these little compact cars just pull out in front of them on the freeway and think they can take their own sweet time getting up to speed while the semi's are locking up the brakes trying to stop.( just and example there) Sure maybe the SUV's do damage to the smaller vehicles, but how many times are the small ones to blame for causing the accident. If that were a reason to ban SUV's then I guess we need to also ban Trains because they just can't stop in time to keep from hitting that little car that decided to try and make it across the tracks instead of waiting in line for a few minutes till the train passes. :disgust: I don't think there should be any banning of anything, maybe there should be an annual retest for your drivers liscense where you have to drive in actual traffic and prove that you know how to drive no matter what you drive. 9 times out of 10 it is stupid drivers that cause the accidents and believe me there are stupid drivers in all catagories of cars. If people would just learn a little patience and not have to get where they are going a minute earlier then the world would be a safer place.

I read the whole thing :)

I really really really agree with the gripe about large vehicles being difficult to anticipate and how dangerous that is in high speed rush-hour traffic. I just wish people would simply make sure that they are really best served by the car they're buying. Sounds to me like any family with less than 3 kids would be best suited by a subaru.... More than that, a minivan.

Here is how I rationalized my car...

1) No family and no way to carpool... only space considerations are back seat big enough when I cant get a motel... enough space to get 2 rigs and 2 friends to a LAN. CHECK.

2) Bumpers that aren't bare minimum and are attached to the unibody with something that my soldering iron can't do. CHECK.

3) Enough pickup that when I have to merge from a blind stop sign into an interstate in a construction zone (because NJDOT forgot that nobody does 55 on I-295) without getting hit. CHECK.

4) 28 MPG HIGHWAY in my own tests. CHECK. ( I bike... (pedals) when im in the borough ))

It's fun to drive, with small enough blind spots and close enough dimensions that I'm not an ass in traffic... and I can lean forward and out to punch the back quarter-panels of SUV's who try to merge into me... (It's happened twice... black suburban, black nav(on the same highway merge, 2 diff occassions clearly)... the other time I knocked on the passenger window of a camry)

I feel I use my V6 Mustang to its fullest and I get 100% bang for the buck. It's reliable, never lacking for power (saftey problem with other cars ive had, read on merge), and I never have to apologize for it.

If every SUV owner could say the same in clear concious, I'd have no gripe.

IMHO....
rear facing 3rd rows in wagons should be illegal... I sat in one once when I was little... scared me then.... on I295 looking at an SUV doing 80 right behind us... you are gaurenteed to die in that kind of pile up... great place to put your kids :(

Ill laugh at you when the prices hit the euro standard of about 3 bucks a gallon... you'll be paying gas with your mcdonalds budged while driving that ford valdez of yours.

Vast majority of people drive those 6000lb beasts around alone on daily basis, practicaly wasting the extra gas they use. On the other hand I have yet to meet someone that uses their sportscar as a daily driver. ..

My main problem is that people with those things dont know what they can handle. I see these idiots all the time, doing 90 in their explorer, swearing from in and out of lane and such, thinkin their explorer can take it no problem.

Im not saying i dont do the same - i speed quite a bit and i do take onramps at 20+ over. The main difference is my cars center of gravity is probably at the level of ford explorer running boards and my suspension was designed to handle those speeds.

i responded to every question you both posed, and replied to your posts, i had one response that might have ticked you off, but seriously. do you drive as close to a semi as you do an SUV? do you get mad that you cant see around a SEMI? no, its because your used to them. get used to SUV's they will be around for a while.

MIKE

You made two assumptions that are incorrect. I originally said SUV drivers follow too close or stay in my blind spots or park *right* next to me....I follow far enough away as do most people. Somehow you are pretty confused on the 'SUV causing people not to be able to see' issue.

Also about your Semi point....a semi is not going to be parking next to me at the movies or blockbuster. On top of that they require special licensing as well as taxing/tolls....

Also I am not only speaking to you in my replies.
