Why are steroids illegal but cigarettes legal?

Both cause possible long term health effects.... However, steroids can increase the size and strength of a person's muscles, whereas smoking has no real positive benefit. In addition, steroids don't adversely affect the lives of others as smoking has sometimes been proven to do.

Kinda weird.

Ever hear of Roid rage... and I'm not talking about the stuff that preperation H can fix

Health Risks
# For men - shrinking of the testicles, reduced sperm count, infertility, baldness, development of breasts, increased risk for prostate cancer.

# For women - growth of facial hair, male-pattern baldness, changes in or cessation of the menstrual cycle, enlargement of the clitoris, deepened voice.

# For adolescents - growth halted prematurely through premature skeletal maturation and accelerated puberty changes. This means that adolescents risk remaining short for the remainder of their lives if they take anabolic steroids before the typical adolescent growth spurt.

Cause the government can make money off cigarettes/alchohol, they cannot off other drugs.

because tobacco already has tax on it. I'm sure if localities/federal government could get taxes on the steroids, it might be different. *shrug* that'd be my guess.

its the society's holistic ignorance. As individuals, we are able to find niche like problems in our government, but not all the problems in all of the government. The government's situation is the exact opposite. As the government evolves, it will slowly deal with all of the ignorant mistakes the government of the past made.

This is why, as screwed up as the US government is, I feel that after extensive reform and about 100-150 years of continual evolution, the situation will be much much prettier.

You're wrong. Nicotine has been shown to have several health benefits.

True, though there were hearings between '88-'90 to see if anabolic steroids should be added to The Controlled Substances Act, but in the end they weren't. As long as you have a prescription, they aren't illegal.

Well, illegal as in not easily obtainable by the general public. I'm sure there are shady websites out there somewhere selling stuff but you'd have to be pretty nuts to trust them and inject the stuff they send you into your body.

Then, by your definition, Amoxicillin is illegal.

Hrm, that's an interesting point... The only difference I can think of is that most people wouldn't buy amoxicillin for recreational purposes, likely not even to experiment once or twice since it doesn't really do anything interesting/fun. Sometimes life is weird I guess.

Because most sports ban the use of drugs also...

People are stupid and will OD on it (same can be said for anything though...)

The government would rather not have little jimmy juicing up to make Football team at 15...

Pretty much.

Plus the fact that banning alcohol and cigarettes, staples of American unhealthy practices, would lead to another prohibition sort of thing.

Because Tobacco companies have lots of money, which they use to convice politicians not to outlaw cigs. (Either by bribes or by hiring incredibly effective lobbyists. Seriously effective. Ever talked to one? They could sell iceboxes to Eskimos)

What f%$#ing planet do you live on?

Post some links that back that up -- that aren't from a tobacco company's website or from a tobacco company-funded study -- and I might believe you.

Taking steroids can cause you to have massive massive breakouts of acne in unusual places. Commonly, the upper back and shoulders. I actually witnessed somebody had a shoulder problem.

Actually nicotine does have health benefits. Cotinine, one of the metabolites of nicotine, has been shown to improve memory and protect brain cells from diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease. The benefits of nicotine are greatly outweighed by the harmfulness of cigarettes, and so scientists and doctors are working to create a nicotine compound that has the benefits, but not the harmful effects.
