Why are some USB hubs powered(p/s) and others by the USB connection?

Powered USB hubs can give full power to any usb device where as Hubs powered by the USB connection are more of extenders that can let you add more un-powered USB devices (ex, printers, most scanners, Digital cameras, eg things and just send data over the usb bus and don't reqire a large amount of juice) Hope this helps... 🙂

Arcanedeath: Thanks for the feedback! What about something like a Gravis (non-vib)GamePad. I could plug that into an extension, right?

You can always plug anything into an unpowered port....but then it's sucking juice from the motherbaord ports as well. And if you get to many that's going to be undue strain on the ports.

Unless the USB device in question has it's own electrical plug (which I highly doubt a gamepad does) a powered USB hub is your best bet....

Though it should work on unpowered...and as long as you don't have too many other unpowered devices you should be okay.
