Why are some people so fanatic?

I've seen some people swear by the operating system they use, say it's the best (blah blah blah) and everything else sucks.

Why do people care so much about what kind of operating system they use?

If it's the right tool for the job, then use it. If it not, use something else.

There is no perfect operating system out there. Every single OS was designed by human beings, therefore there are imperfections somewhere in there.

I admit that we all have preferences in what we would like to use, but I think it's mostly because that particular software in question fits our needs and we are most comfortable with with. But saying it's the best just because you might not know any better....is rather childish.

Same reason people are fanatical about things like consoles, games, type of computers, cars,.......

They are idiots

People need a reason, any reason, to feel good about themselves.

For example, I signed up for this forum on 1/4/2001. That automatically makes me better than just about anyone else. Anubis has a pretty awesome join date too, but it's not nearly as cool as 1/4.

but seriously? It doesn't matter. I can say that I try to recommend linux to people who have tons of problems with their PCs that run windows, but other than that, doesn't matter to me.

recommend is one thing. and I highly encourage that myself. but fanatics go a bit beyond "recommend" 😉

Everybody needs something to be fanatical about.
For someone who makes a living running a clothing store, it might be fashion.
For someone that sells auto parts, it might be automobiles.
For every guy who grew up dreaming of being a rockstar, it is a band.
Here on Anandtech, we have 400-reply long discussions on what's the best beer or what amount of trans-fats a particular cheeseburger contains.
For someone who works in the computer industry, it might be an Operating System or a Programming Environment.

Not that hard to understand. Everybody needs something to be obsessively neurotic about.

I run OS/X WARP. Everything else is a piece of crap. anyone who uses anything else needs to DIAF.

because NT4 sucks and I hate using it at work. I insist on upgrading the computers and OS since it would only cost 700$ at most.

Humans at the core are social animals. What's more, we're tribal animals. I really think the the fanboy instinct is actually a dysfunctional version of the ethnic racism instinct that makes it easier to go to war with neighboring tribes.

I'd rather have MAC fanboys run around then us killing eachother 😉

Wait I'd have to think about that...

*pauses*

After careful deliberation, I'm going to maintain that MAC fanboys are slightly better than people slaughtering...slightly 😉

I am pretty good with Operating Systems. I have no issues operating or installing BSD, Linux, Aix, Sco, Windows, however I just can't seem to figure out WomanOS.

That said ... people are fanatic about their OS for many reasons. It could just be that they are morons or that Operating systems are their "passion" in life, or maybe they just are really really pissed off about the politics involved with some players on the market. Ahh well. I prefer the "use the best tool for the job" method. Windows for Games, BSD for firewalls, Linux/Unix/BSD for servers, and anything goes for desktop usage.
