Question Why are some chair mats in Keyshape/keyhole shape?

Duh...because that's the part that goes under the desk...generally only for when the chair is rolled under and not in use.

Depends on the floor space vs mat dimensions. If it's vinyl then I'd prefer it wide enough to go under the desk legs to reduce the amount it curls over time, but I'd also prefer it not to be vinyl for this (and general UV damage/cracking) reason.
