Why are some 280x's 8+6 and others 8+8?

I assume some more overclocking oriented than others. 8+8 is custom VRM design?

Not only the 280x but other GPUs as well (gtx770). The power draw of 280x is what, 240 watt? 8 + 6 pin (150w + 75w) + 75w pcie slot = 300w. So if highly OC'd it could probably reach 300w and if run 24/7 mining, the 8+8 pin would make sense.

I'm not quite sure but it's possible that having more pins feeds the card with more stable power, even if actual power consumption could be handled by fewer pins.

I'd agree that it's for stable power delivery and higher power draw for overclocking. You see this on custom factory OC'ed GPUs quite frequently.
