Why are so many people hooked on LOST?

Watched the first 5 episodes of season 1 on dvd....not overly impressed...kinda slow. Not like when I watched 24...hooked on the first show...watched 4 season back to back in a couple of months.

Does it get better? Should I stick with it until it does?

It gets better, but you actually have to have a brain and a soul to appreciate it.

It's entertaining but each episode could be condensed to about 5 minutes of actual happenings...

We (wife and I) watched Season 1 on DVD and loved it. Some days we'd watch 6 eps in a row. This week's ep was the first one I didn't like, it was slow and not a lot happened until the end.

i am not completely sold on LOST, but i'm close to it. i was at a friend's about 2 months ago and she was raving about how amazing LOST is, so i watched season 1.

the key to lost is that there is a lot of significance to certain events and actions. the smallest things may be critical, so you need to have a good eye. plus, there's a lot of history involved and there are hundreds of interpretations and theories to everything. read a LOST thread and see how much elaboration goes into an episode; it's pretty amazing.

i have to say though that LOST is an analytical drama. you really have to be focused on the everything and observant. otherwise, you won't get into it.

I've only seen the first 8 episodes on DVD (have the rest from netflix, waiting to watch).

To me it has a similar feel to Memento, where the interest comes from the current story plus the flashbacks changing your perception of each character in turn. You start out thinking about a character one way, then (Locke the hunter for example) you find they are (or were) a completely different person.

It's not running around and endless daughter-kidnapping like 24, more of a mind puzzle like House, M.D.

You forgot to mention all the characters and how each of them are interesting and what their past, personalities and views affect what goes on.

Folks this is like the #1 drama on TV right now. I highly recommend watching the 1st season on DVD for those who haven't. It's best in widescreen and in digital 5.1 surround sound!

There is more to the episode than what you see on TV. Usually those that don't get it hate the show.

This is soooo true. Take for example, in season 1, something like the 3-4 episode they ran into a polar bear. How many noticed the Dharma marking on it? Of course now, you realize how important that is... Same with the shark. That image was on the screen for what 1/2 a second?

those that get what? I've heard that it is very analytical and the way one person views something may not be the same as another person....

Let me be more specific. My old roomate kept bugging me to watch it, cause he said it was so good. I was like eh, it cant be that good. I watched two episodes in the middle of the season and it didnt do anything for me. Another person told me that they saw the whole season over a weekend, and I thought they were crazy. He let me the discs. So I was bored, and I had the whole season on disc, and started watching them from the start...after about 4 episodes, I was totally hooked, and had to watch the next one. I ended up watching the whole season in a weekend. Its that good. I told my gf to watch it to, she told me "eh, I saw a few episodes once, didnt seem special". I gave her the discs, she started watching it, and she saw the whole season in a weekend, and now she's hooked too and has repeatedly thanked me for giving it to her in the first place :p.

I have tivo, and lost is the ONLY show that pwns me so much that I actually watch it when its on, and sit through the commericials.

A lot of people dont "get it" though. Its not about what happens. Very little happens every episode, but thats fine. There are two main aspects to lost that make it so interesting. Firstly, the characters. Its what the show is really about. Which I why I say you need a soul to appreciate it. Once you see a bunch of flashbacks, and start to see the reason why the people are the way they are, and how theyre all connected in a strange way, not to mention the characters are just in general interesting, you feel for them and actually care what happens to them. The actual plot is secondary to the character development.

But as far as the plot goes, its a mystery. Half of the fun is trying to figure out what is going to happen, and what is going on. A brain is useful for this. If you had heard the wild ideas about what was in the hatch and what was going on, and then we find out what it actually was. Its good stuff. We still dont know what the deal is with the monsters, who the others are, if the people chasing them now really are the same others as the one that took walt, what the deal is with the numbers, where the french woman went, what is this dharma initiative REALLY, on and on. Every episode you get one more little piece, and you know that little bit more. Some people go to great lengths to analyze the hell out of this stuff.

Personally, I shut the TV off as soon as the episode is over so I dont hear next weeks preview. Its more fun that way. I'm going to watch it anyway. Apparently everyone in the world knew what was going to happen last episode but me. :p

I have been really disappointed with Lost this season. they just keep replaying the same episode from different views. I've pretty much given up on it.

Lost is a series of buildups and cliffhangers which are never satisfactorily resolved. The action often makes you think "how on earth could that happen". Soon you give up and merely accept everything as natural. Having said that, I still watch every episode, so
in a sense it's like a cheap drug that I know is bad for me but I still can't stop myself from watching it.
