What's more interesting is that they sell condoms in bowling alley restrooms.

Vending machines owned and operated by a company that does not own the business or property on which they are placed have to make a profit for BOTH the property owner AND the vending machine company. In this case, they must pay a fee to the state DOT.

So why not charge $20 per candy bar?

because its a bit excessive

there is a fine line between getting the most $ for your product and overcharging and driving customers away/elsewhere

Snickers Bar - guess of production cost of 20 cents.

Grocery Store
Sold to grocery store for 35 cents a bar.
Grocery store sells for 50 cents a bar.

Vending Machine
Sold to distributor for 35 cents a bar
Sold to vending machine company for 45 cents a bar.
Vending company sells for 1 dollar.
25-35 cents for the vendor
and 10-20 cents for the place that is hosting the vending machine company's machine.

Exactly. The sole reason the price is where it is, is because consumers are willing to pay for it, not because of added costs. If the candy bars were twice as cheap to make, they could still be sold for the same price b/c pple are willing to buy them at that price. The only relevance cost has in this equation is if the cost of the vending machine supercedes revenue, then there will be no vending machine.

Another thing to consider is where the money is going... I don't know how it is in other states, but here in Arizona, 100% the profits from vending machines go fund programs for the blind, deaf, and otherwise disabled. It makes the extra 25 cents or so seem a lot less significant.
